Samuel Bixby Obituary

Publish in a newspaper

Samuel Nathan Bixby JR, passed away after a long battle of esophageal cancer and other illnesses on September 24, 2025. Born in Dowagiac, Michigan, on May 19, 1958, to Sam and Joan Bixby, Samuel, known to all as Sam.

Sam was a dedicated worker at the City of Elwood Wastewater Treatment Plant, providing over 40 years of service before his well-deserved retirement in 2020. He embraced his hobbies with the same vigor he had for life, whether it was listening to his favorite band, Godsmack, or enjoying the great outdoors through fishing, coon hunting, deer hunting, and trapping.

On March 16, 1978, Sam married the love of his life, Anna Simmons Bixby. Their love story spanned 47 years, filled with beautiful moments and treasured memories. Their bond of love gave life to two sons, Shane Bixby and Shawn Bixby. Sam also leaves behind his adored grandchildren, Sydney (fur ball companion Bailey Bixby) and Sully Bixby, (fiancée Makayla) a newborn great-grandson, Boden Bixby, who will grow up hearing wonderful stories about his great-grandfather. He is also survived by his brothers Terry (Kecia), Donald (Dawn), and Mark Bixby (Peggy); his sisters Brenda Bixby, Debbie (Tim) Bixby, and Tammy Shepard; and sisters-in-law Cathy Bixby and Pam Baldwin; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceding him in death were his parents, Sam and Joan Bixby, and his brothers Ronnie, Mike, George, and Danny Bixby, and brother-in-law Mark Shepard.

A visitation will be held on Monday, September 29, 2025, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Dunnichay Funeral Home, 1113 South Anderson Street, Elwood, Indiana. A funeral service celebrating Sam's life will begin at 7:00 pm, with Pastor Amos Carmichael officiating. Sam's life will be remembered as one filled with love, laughter, and an adventurous spirit that will forever inspire his loved ones.

We invite you to share your memories and upload photos of Samuel Bixby on his memorial page. Your tributes can serve as a comfort to the family and a celebration of a life well-lived.
