Samuel Braxton Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Woody Home for Services on Dec. 24, 2025.
Samuel Braxton, 84 years old, a long-time resident of East Orange, NJ, passed away on Friday, December 19, 2025. He leaves behind his wife of 59 years, the love of his life Patricia and the "apple of his eye", his daughter Kimberly. Along with his favorite sister-in-law and football watching buddy Michelle C. James.
Samuel, affectionally known as Sam by those who loved him, was born October 24, 1941, in Baltimore, MD. He was the youngest son to his mother Mary-Lizzie Madison (Braxton) and father Robert Braxton. He was predeceased by his sister Anna Custis and brother Willie Braxton. Sam was raised in Pamplin City, VA where he developed a love for baseball. He graduated high school and played baseball in the Tidewater league as a short stop. One of his favorite stories to tell was when he hit a foul tip off of Leroy Robert "Satchel" Paige. After leaving baseball and moving north, he worked several manufacturing jobs. In 1961 he met his "honey" Patty through her aunt Evelyn. He then enlisted in the navy in 1964. Pat and Sam were married on June 11, 1966, in Newark, NJ. In 1968 he was honorably discharged from the US Navy.
After being discharged from the Navy he worked several jobs until he found his place at United Parcel Service in 1970. He worked at UPS as a clerk and was a shop steward representative for the Teamsters. He retired at the age of 55 from United Parcel Service after 25 years of service.
Sam had a variety of interests outside of work. He studied the martial arts for several years (after a brief stint in ballet to encourage his daughter not to quit her dance studies). He loved spending time with family, going to the beach, hanging out with his friends, chasing his dog Biscuit and listening to favorite Blues artists (Tyrone Davis, Little Milton, and Ray Charles). And although he denied it, Sam had a sweet tooth and he loved to sneak cookies when he thought no one was watching. The only 'person' Sam had a problem with was his Amazon ALEXA when she wouldn't play the music he wanted to hear!
Sam brought wisdom and a quiet strength with him where ever he went. He was devoted to his family and a trusted and loyal friend. He was always grateful for every blessing he received and never complained. Sam is survived by his wife Pat, his daughter Kimberly, his niece Geraldine Custis, and his sister-in-law Michelle C. James.

Sam was the nicest, patient and kind friend to Don and I for so many years. He had a quiet strength that carried him through his life. He was so blessed to have married Pat who loved him unconditionally and to have an accomplished, smart daughter in Kimberly both of whom kept him laughing with their great sense of humor. We know that he is at peace and in God's loving hands -rest easy Sam we miss you.
