Loving husband and father, Roy J. Berg, 96, of West Orange, passed away peacefully on December 26, 2025.
Born in 1929 to Oscar and Lydia (Knutsen) Berg in
Orange, NJ. Roy invited Jesus Christ into his life as Lord and Savior at the age of 14. In 1946, he graduated West Orange High School and then attended Trinity Seminary and Bible Institute in Minneapolis, MN. After Bible School, he worked for two Uncles learning both the carpentry and painting trades. He liked these trades so much he opened his own business. In 1951, he married Millie, the love of his life. They settled in West Orange in 1955. Roy used his skills to build their home.
Roy served as choir director and song leader for many years, a Sunday School Teacher, and a Deacon. He helped with the construction of the church when it moved from
Orange, NJ to Essex Fells, as well as construction of the white parsonage. Roy worked on the initial construction of Camp Spofford in NH and spent many years painting their buildings weekends in the summer. He served for years on the Board of the Christian Home for Children at Ft. Lee, NJ. For 25 years he served on Calvary's Prison Ministry Team at the Essex County Youth House in Newark.
He was appointed auxiliary chaplain, which allowed him to visit the boy's units any time during the week. Roy retired from his painting and decorating business in 1993. He was a member of the Calvary Association of Retired Persons group (CARP) and continued in ministry at the Essex County Youth House in Newark until he was 76, in 2005.
He was predeceased by his parents Oscar and Lydia (Knutsen) Berg, his brother, Arvid M. Berg and his wife Alice; his three brother-in-laws; John and his wives, Shirley then Eleanor, Jarle Jr., Ronald Edwin; his sister-in-law Marit Frasca and her husband Harry; beloved nieces, Cynthia Frasca and Rebecca Svaan; and most recently his beloved wife, Millie, of 72 wonderful years.
He is survived by his beloved children, Steven (Beth) and Linda (Frank); dear grandchildren: James (Kelly), Jon Sr. (Marji), Chrissy and Andrew (Tori); five dear great-grandchildren, Jon Jr., Hailey, Audra, Ava, and Annika; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
The joy of Roy's life was walking and winning souls for Jesus Christ. He was grateful and blessed for the opportunity to witness, to make a difference in the lives of boys in the Youth House in Newark.

Roseland, NJ, shookfarmer.com. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Calvary Church, 450 Fells Road, Essex Fells, NJ on January 17th at 12 noon.
