Samuel Distefano Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Broussard's Mortuary - Nederland on Mar. 18, 2026.
Samuel Distefano, Jr., left on his journey to the Promised Land of God on Thursday, March 12, 2026, at the tender age of 70. He was born on June 26, 1955, to Samuel Distefano, Sr., and Elsie Thibodeaux Distefano, in Beaumont, Texas.

Sam graduated from Nederland High School. First, he became a merchant marine sailing internationally on Mobil Oil supertankers. After marrying, he changed to local tugboat employment. Then he joined the International Brotherhood of Painters and Allied Trades, Local 328, for 17 years until it folded. He built and restored houses and assumed ownership of Dean's House Painting. During his career he painted the Rainbow Bridge during its 1994 restoration. His careers were often dangerous, and his family appreciated the great risks he took in providing for them.

Having been a member for 51 years, Sam is an Honorary Lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus Council 5145 and also a member of the Dick Dowling Assembly of Fourth Degree Knights. Sam attended St. Charles Catholic Church in Nederland his whole life.

Sam will be greatly missed by his wife, Norma Whigham Distefano; his mother, Elsie Terracina; his children, Samuel David Distefano, Mary Beth Jennusa, Jesse Distefano, and Micah Distefano; grandchildren Jaden Distefano, Lila Jennusa, and Kasen Jennusa; brothers, David Distefano, Gregory Distefano, and Gene Paul Distefano; sister, Jennifer Distefano Rosetta; and a host of nephews and nieces.

He is preceded in death by his father; brother, Christopher Distefano; and his sisters-in-law Cindy Distefano and Brenda P. Distefano.

Sam was born to be wild before it was even a song. He was full of energy, ability, and daring. Harley Davidson motorcycles became his favorite pastime, as well as fishing and nature in general. He had many artistic talents including weaving rope items, wire art, leather crafts, making knives and craft painting. He had a green thumb and cooked excellently. If you needed to know how to do something, Sam could tell you or show you. Before google, there was Sam.

Sam was well-liked by young and old, male and female, because he made people feel good by the attention he paid to them, plus he made us laugh so much. But when things were serious, he said or did just the right thing. He was a student of human nature.

Sam was legendary for showing up at just the right time to rescue someone. He was compassionate to those who needed something to eat and a place to stay, so he shared unsparingly.

Sam's family was of utmost importance to him. He wanted to teach his children everything he could, take care of them, guide them, enjoy them and protect them while loving them deeply.

So, as we miss the joy he brought to us and are mourning his passing, let us thank God for the time we had with him and celebrate that he is now free of pain and suffering in the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
