Samuel M. Girod, 87, of Berne, Indiana, passed away late Tuesday evening, January 13, 2026, at his residence.
He was born on May 13, 1938, in Monroe, Indiana, to the late Menno S. and Maryann W. (Schwartz) Girod. Samuel was united in marriage to Barbara N. Wengerd on November 20, 1958, and she preceded him in death on November 2, 2021. Later, Samuel married Ada E. Wickey-Schwartz on November 27, 2022.
Samuel was a member of the Old Order Amish.
He was a lifelong farmer and took a particular interest in raising dairy cattle.
Samuel is survived by his wife, Ada Girod of Berne, Indiana; daughter, Christina W. (Enos J.) Schwartz of Berne, Indiana; son, Samuel W. (Josephine J.) Girod of Owingsville, Kentucky; daughter, Mary W. (Elmer Z.) Hilty of Berne, Indiana; step-son, Leander A.R. (Mandy E.) Schwartz of Berne, Indiana; step-daughter, Lucy A.R. (Jacob E.R.) Girod of Olympia, Kentucky; step-daughter, Judy A.R. (James N.) Girod of Owingsville, Kentucky; step-daughter, Ruth A.R. (Reuben E.J.) Schwartz of Byrant, Indiana; step-daughter, Elma A.R. (Enos E.J.) Schwartz of Bryant, Indiana; step-daughter, Ada A.R. (William L.) Christner of Bryant, Indiana; step-daughter, Mary A.R. (Solomon S.) Wickey of Auburn, Indiana; brother, David M. (Rebecca) Girod of Berne, Indiana; brother, Benjamin M. (Esther) Girod of Berne, Indiana; sister, Lizzie M. Christner of Berne, Indiana; sister, Mary M. (John B.) Schwartz of Moorland, Indiana; sister, Martha M. (Noah B.) Schwartz of Decatur, Indiana; sister, Emma M. (Sam) Christner of Monroe, Indiana; sister, Josephine M. (Noah) Wengerd of Geneva, Indiana; 23 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Girod; son, David Girod; six grandchildren; three brothers, Jerry M., Amos M., and Joe M. Girod; and one sister, Susan M. Schwartz.
A funeral service will be held at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, January 17, 2026, at the Enos J. Schwartz Residence, 1504 East 650 South Berne, Indiana, with Bishop John E. Schwartz officiating. Burial will follow at Schwartz Cemetery in rural Berne, Indiana.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, January 15, 2026, and from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, January 16, 2026, at the Enos J. Schwartz Residence.
