HENDERSON- Samuel Richard Rogers, 91, of Lynne Avenue, died Friday, February 6, 2026 at the VA Medical Center in Durham. A Vance County native, born June 14, 1934, he was the son of the late Eugene Cecil Rogers, Sr. and Aileen Ellis Rogers and was the widower of Nellie Grey Dunn Rogers.
Richard was a US Navy Veteran and formerly served in the National Guard; he was a member of the American Legion Post #60 of Henderson. After the Navy, he joined the Henderson Fire Department, served for 38 years and retired as the assistant chief. Richard was a longtime member of Rebuilding Hope. He was a lifelong member of New Sandy Creek Baptist Church where he served many years as a deacon and formerly sang in the choir. In 2019 he was awarded the “Life Deacon Award” by New Sandy Creek Baptist Church for his outstanding ministry and service to the church.
Funeral services will be held Friday, February 13, 2026 at 2:00 P.M. in the sanctuary of New Sandy Creek Baptist Church by Dr. Steven Brown and Rev. Tim Burgess. Burial with military and fireman honors will follow in the church cemetery.
Richard and Nellie Grey were married for 65 years and raised three children. Surviving are his sons Tim Rogers (Kathy) of Oxford and Marc Rogers (Mary) of Henderson and a daughter Laura Ann R. Parham (James) of Henderson. Richard was so very proud of his grandsons, Joshua Rogers (Dina) of Memphis and Samuel Parham of Henderson.
In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, Eugene C. Rogers, Jr.; and three sisters, Ruth R. Romania, Helen R. Allen and Ann R. Robertson.
The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. at J.M. White Funeral Home and at other times during the week, Monday through Wednesday, in the afternoons at his home, 1852 Lynne Ave., Henderson, NC 27536.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to New Sandy Creek Baptist Church, 1699 Weldon’s Mill Road, Henderson, NC 27537.
Serving as pallbearers will be members of the Henderson Fire Department.
