Sandra "Sandy" Coons, 78 of Athens passed away on February 7, 2025 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson surrounded by her loving family.
Sandy is survived by her loyal son, Bobby Coons and his daughter, Anna Haight. She is also survived by her daughters, Charlene Asbury and Christine Felix, her sister, Patricia Saulpaugh and the extended Saulpaugh family, her uncle Chris Pfister and his wife Carol, Beth and Douglas Earle, Susan and Ronnie Jr and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Sandy was a homemaker and a house cleaner who undertook her work with care and devotion. Many homes in Athens were cleaned by Sandy, as well as diligently cleaning the local post office for over 20 years.
Faith was very important in Sandy's life. She was a devout life member of First Reformed Church of Athens and was active in the church choir as well as in many other church functions. Sandy cleaned the church and helped maintain the physical appearance of the historic church building. Even in later years when her mobility was diminishing, she made an effort to keep the many details of the church clean and polished.
The Christmas season also played a key part of her life. In most years, those Christmas duties would start out in July when she worked hard to search out and provide presents for all. She put much effort and thought into this process. Her holiday home was always well decorated inside and out.
As Sandy's movements became more constrained, she found it necessary to own devices that restored her ability to live and active life. You would often see her around on her senior scooter. That support allowed her to spend meaningful hours near the river she loved and in the village that was her life. Sandy learned that she could be very happy enjoying the simple treasurers that her surroundings and friends brought to her.
Along with her human friends, Sandy also kept many animal friends who in return gave her hours of valued companionship over the years. She will be remembered by all for her sense of humor, humanity and generosity.
A memorial mass will be held at the First Reformed Church of Athens, 18 N. Church St., Athens at a time to be announced.
Any donations in Sandy's memory should be made to the First Reformed Church of Athens, 18 N. Church St. Athens, NY.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Richards Funeral Home in Cairo.
