Sandra Giles Obituary

Published by Forest Lawn - Glendale on Dec. 25, 2016.
Sandra Giles, actress and pin-up icon, has died at the age of 84 on December 25, in Los Angeles. Known for her bombshell good looks, Giles was born Leila Bernice Giles in Hooker, Oklahoma on July 24, 1932 and raised in Texas. After winning local beauty contests, she hitchhiked to Los Angeles as a teenager. Her striking looks gained immediate attention. Producer AC Lyle, who cast Sandra in his western, "Black Spurs," was quoted as saying that "Sandra was one of the most beautiful young women in this town, and that was at a time when the town was filled with charming, beautiful ladies." TV appearances and features in Life Magazine soon blossomed into movie roles, most notably "Daddy-O" with Dick Contino, and "It Happened at the World's Fair" with Elvis Presley. Giles appeared in numerous TV shows during her career including "Columbo", "Quincy", "The Odd Couple", "Adam 12", "Burke's Law", "Bachelor Father", "The Steve Allen Show", and Rawhide". Her film work included "It Happened at the World's Fair", McClintock", and "The Mad Bomber" among others. On stage, she co-starred with Don Knotts in "Last of the Red Hot Lovers," with Mickey Rooney and Tony Randall in "The Odd Couple" and with Bob Crane in "Beginner's Luck." In later years, she hosted popular swing dance nights in Los Angeles benefitting local charities. Her last swing dance event was in 2014. That same year, she was diagnosed with Dementia. She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Piller, wife of the late Michael Piller, two grandchildren, Shawn Piller and Brent Piller, and one great grandson, Ryan Lorber. Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Piller Family Fund in the College of Arts and Sciences, University of North Carolina Arts and Sciences Foundation: Piller Family Fund in the College of Arts and Sciences University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill 523 E. Sandra I miss you! Thinking back to 1997-98 you were so kind to me. Working for you was a blessing, I realize now, as I age. You inspired me almost 30 years ago. I struggled with finding myself and you helped set me on a path. I have had an awesome life. Your kindness and acceptance warms my heart to this day. I miss our talks and working on the news letter and manually updating the email lists -ouch-,,, Now it’s so easy to do,, but we did it old school and it worked. Thank you for being apart of my life. I miss your stories and your positive ness. You taught me how to look ahead and not get stuck. Thank you, I will always remember you Sandra.

I have known Sandra since 1967. She was acting, playing tennis and dating Bobbie Riggs! Sandra was always very social and fun to be around! We played lots of tennis socially and played Poker afterwards at Jannette Hill's House on Coldwater Canyon every weekend. In the late 70's and 80's she started her dance group evenings at a private Backgammon & Disco Club owned by Hugh Hefner called PiPs, which was fun and social! God Bless Sandra, I am sure she is still dancing and having fun in heaven this moment! Sandra was a lovely friend and will be missed by everyone that knew her, I am sure of that!
Bye, bye for now Sandra!
With love,
Misty Moore Weiss

I taught West Coast Swing for Sandra's "Dancers And Romancers" night at a restaurant in Studio City. She was always such a positive thinker. I met my boyfriend there. We are still "dancing & romancing". So she was a meaningful part of my life. Dena Wayman, Hollywood Hills, CA February 20, 2017

Sandra,
We've only recently met but I wanted to extend heartfelt condolences to you at your mom's passing. I was so glad to have been in your home Christmas Eve among all the joyfulness, and will always have the special memory of her responding to my singing Just in Time. Very sweet. Thinking of you and yours on this day.

I attended several Sandra events back in the 90's. She was always quite the promoter, and a lovely lady to know. Her events were well attended, and her personality encouraged people to enjoy themselves. She was one of a kind; rare and respected by many. She will always be remembered, especially by those that met at or through her events, and enjoyed successful friendships and/or relationships. We will smile for her whenever her name is spoken, or a random memory of her kindness comes across our thoughts. Thank you Sandra, for your thoughtful dedication to the (mostly) single community, for spreading the joy of Dance, and for all that you did to bring people together. Your essence will always be a part of us.
