Sandra McWhirter Obituary

Published by Legacy on Jul. 18, 2025.
Sam was born on July 8,1942, in Malvern, Iowa, to Blain and Ocle (Caudell) Dickersbach. Sam's journey through life was one marked not only by her many accomplishments but also by the love she poured into every endeavor.
A proud graduate of Malvern High School and Northwest Missouri State, where she met the love of her life Robert "Bobby" McWhirter, Sam embraced the joys of education. Her career saw her touch many lives, whether through her work at Kidville in Baxter, as a substitute teacher in Baxter and Newton, or through her remarkable talents in sales at Von Maur's gift department. With a genuine smile that lit up her surroundings, she became affectionately known as "Grandma Sam" to all. Epitomizing kindness and fun that made her home a haven for family and friends alike.
Sam was a force of nature, meticulously tending to her house and garden while hosting extravagant celebrations that brought joy to many. Her Halloween Witch and Christmas Eve parties were not merely gatherings, but traditions filled with laughter and warmth. With a heart as big as her love for life, Sam generously supported the youth of Baxter in person and financially, making a significant impact on her community. She was in the women's pool league in Baxter for years; was a sharp-shooter and good pool player.
Sam's creative spirit shone through in every quilt she crafted from Crown Royal velvet bags, which she lovingly donated to various auctions to raise funds for many causes. She would also ride her trike to support any poker run benefit. Sam delighted in life's simple pleasures, be it traveling to farm sales with Bobby, reveling in spirited bike nights, or enjoying her cherished hobbies like gardening, playing cards, riding her Harley, or reading romance novels. She also loved spending time with her grandkids, whether it was going shopping and having lunch with Hannah or completing tasks around the house and playing a game of pool with Hunter. She also loved watching her great-grandson, Brecken, play with whatever new toy or book she bought him. Any time she got with her grandkids was "marvelous." And no one could forget her decorated Christmas tree, adorned exclusively with drummer boys, a whimsical touch that embodied her fun-loving nature.
Sam's circle of loved ones includes her devoted grandchildren, Hannah and Hunter McWhirter, and her great-grandson, Brecken McWhirter, daughter-in-law, Julie McWhirter, her foreign exchange son, Christian (Lillian) Anderson, along with their sons, Simon and Rasmus; nephews, Trevor Henderson and JB Dixon, and close friend Pastor Jerry Stevenson will also remember her as a beacon of love and support. She will also be missed by all of her "adopted grandkids" who called her Grandma Sam, which were many, as anyone she met knew her from there on. Sam had a warm, loving heart. She welcomed any and all and loved them as her own.
Sam is reunited in spirit with those who preceded her, including her beloved husband, Bobby, her son Brian McWhirter, her parents, her sister Ida (Bill) Dixon, and her brother Burt Dickersbach. Their warmth and guidance remain with her family as they celebrate a life so beautifully lived. In the hearts of all who knew her, Sandra "Sam" McWhirter leaves an indelible mark, one defined by love, generosity, and an infectious spirit that inspired everyone she encountered. She will be cherished and remembered forever. A brilliant star shining in the memories of all who were fortunate enough to experience her light.
