Indiana Funeral Care - IndianapolisSandy Payne, born on July 4, 1952, in St. Paul, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2026. As the daughter of Staff Sergeant Richard Payne of the United States Air Force, Sandy’s childhood was marked by numerous relocations across the United States and abroad, including a significant period in Turkey during the Korean War.
She pursued higher education at the University of California, Riverside, earning a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering in 1974. Sandy devoted her professional life to Quaker Houghton in Kokomo, Indiana, where she served as a Senior Procurement and Inventory Specialist from May 2006 until her passing.
A committed member of her community, Sandy dedicated 20 years as the Canine Superintendent at the Berrien County Youth Fair and actively participated in the Berrien County Kennel Club during her time in Michigan. She was also a devoted fan of the Chicago Cubs, regularly enjoying their games throughout the spring and summer seasons.
Sandy’s many passions reflected her warm and generous spirit; she loved crafting, reading, puzzles, sewing, bowling, ceramics, and cherished long conversations with family and friends. She especially treasured her time with her two sons, Jason and Justin, sharing moments involving board games, cards, puzzles, reading, dog showing, antique shopping, and the discovery of old farm toys and dishware.
Known affectionately as a mother to many—including her sons’ childhood friends—Sandy’s nurturing nature touched all who knew her.
She is lovingly remembered by her sons, Jason Derrow of Kokomo, Indiana, and Justin (Susan) Derrow of Niles, Michigan; her bonus grandchildren Tony (Barbie) Olmstead of Galien, Michigan, and John (Brittany) Bennett of Niles, Michigan; and her bonus great-grandchildren Warren, Aiden, Hensley, and Rylee.
Sandy is also survived by her niece Cheryl (Billy) Robinson; great-niece Stephanie (Bryan) Mason and Travis (Lacie) Robinson; as well as great-great nieces and nephews Freya, Axel, Levi, and Huckson.
She was preceded in death by her parents Richard and Elaine Payne; her sister Barbara (Jeff) Williams; her bonus grandson Rocky Bennett; and niece Tammy Williams.
Sandy Payne’s life was one of dedication, love, and service to her community. Her legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of her family and all who were fortunate to know her.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday, April 25, at the American Legion, 2604 S. Lafountain Street, Kokomo, Indiana 46902, from 1 to 4 p.m. All who knew Sandy are warmly invited to attend and honor her memory.
