Celebration of Life: Sandra Campbell Scoggins

Sandra Campbell Scoggins, the legendary educator who danced and sang her way through English grammar, passed away peacefully at the age of 81. Known for her perfect balance of stern discipline and a brilliant sense of humor, she spent her life

proving that education, and life itself, was a performance worth a standing ovation. Though a disability ended her formal teaching career thirty years ago, Sandra never truly stopped teaching. She turned a personal "interruption" into a lifelong lesson for her students, family, and circle of friends: that while life may shift your path, it should never dim your focus. She famously told those around her that when interruptions happen, "you step over them and keep moving."

She lived this mantra daily, shifting her own goals toward continuous self-improvement and keeping her sharp, witty mind engaged until her final days. She was a living testament to the idea that while goals may change, the spirit remains unshakeable.

Outside of the classroom, her life was defined by service and fellowship. She was a dedicated member of First Baptist Church, where her faith provided a foundation for her strength. She was also a proud member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the professional society for women educators, and the LaFayette Woman's Club, where she shared her wit and wisdom with friends and colleagues alike.

Her influence spanned the entire educational spectrum. Throughout her distinguished career, she taught at the elementary, middle, and high school levels, ensuring that students of all ages found joy in learning. Beyond the classroom, she served with

distinction in the Walker County Board of Education Central Office and eventually as the Principal of LaFayette High School.

She was a visionary leader, instrumental in the development and creation of the new LaFayette High School campus. While her office changed over the years, her method never did, she was a decorated multi-year Teacher of the Year and Star Teacher of the Year who believed that if a student wasn't laughing, they might not be learning. Whether she was performing a dance to help a class remember sentence diagramming or using song to master conjugations, she made the English language unforgettable. She brought that same theatrical dedication to her beloved Alabama Crimson Tide, where her game-day "performance" included a strictly unwashed lucky T-shirt that remained untouched by soap and water as long as Bama kept winning.

To her students, she was more than a principal; she was a mentor who knew when to be firm and when to be funny. As one alumnus noted, she possessed the rare gift that "turned boys into men" and students into leaders through her unwavering guidance. Her legacy is etched into the halls of LaFayette and in the lives of the thousands of alumni who still remember her "performances" fondly.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 57 years, Ronnie; her children, Scott Stewart and Barrett Sellers (Dawn); her sisters, Jane Fitzgerald (Pascal); Jerri Underwood (Jim Burns); her brother, KC Campbell (Chi Ward); and her brother-in-law, Glenn Scoggins, along with a beloved circle of nieces and nephews. She now joins her parents, Hugh and Louise Campbell, and her parents-in-law, JT and Bessie Scoggins who preceded her in death.

As a celebrated educator and a woman who shared her wit and wisdom with everyone she met, Sandra was truly at her best when the house was full. To honor her love for entertaining, her family invites you to her home this Sunday, February 8, at 2:00 PM for one last celebration of a life lived out loud. The service will begin at 2:00 PM, with a reception to follow.

To honor Sandra's lifelong love for both the beauty of nature and the power of learning, the family welcomes floral tributes or donations to the First Baptist Church Hammond Student Scholarship Fund. Either gesture is a perfect reflection of the things she held dear.
