Sandra J. Strange (Howell), 82, passed away on February 2, 2025, at her home in Panama City Beach, Florida.
Born on September 6, 1942, in Chipley, Florida, Sandra was a proud graduate of Chipley High School. She later pursued certification as a mortgage underwriter at the Merrell Institute. Her career spanned over four decades in banking, where she built a reputation for her intelligence, determination, and strong work ethic. Most recently, she served as a manager at a tax office, continuing her dedication to her profession.
Sandra was a devoted mother to her daughters Melissa Allen, Stacey Strange-Madden, and foster daughter Mildred Doell. She cherished her role as a grandmother to seven grandchildren and a great-grandmother to eight great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Sarah Kellum (JW Kellum) and brothers Charles Howell (Paulette Howell) and William "Bill" Howell (Loanva Howell). She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Freddie A. Strange; her granddaughter Ashley Coyne; her parents Charles Q. and Alma Howell; and her grandparents Dollie and James M. Chatman.
A woman of resilience and warmth, Sandra was often described as being like a turtle-tough on the outside but soft within. She was ambitious and driven yet deeply devoted to those she loved. She found joy in spending time with family, especially her grandchildren and her beloved cat Alice Coo- purr. In her younger years, she expressed creativity through sewing, crafting clothes and costumes for her children and grandchildren. A talented cook, she was known for making the best grits and fried green tomatoes among many other delicious meals. She had a deep love for the beach-whether enjoying sunsets or relaxing by the pool-and found peace in the beauty of coastal life.
As the wife of a military serviceman, Sandra embraced the challenges and rewards that came with being part of a military family. Her strength and adaptability were evident throughout her life as she balanced career ambitions with unwavering dedication to those around her.
A memorial service will be held at Tallahassee National Cemetery at a later date, followed by a Celebration of Life at her home in Panama City Beach, Florida.
Sandra's legacy of love, perseverance, and devotion will live on in the hearts of those who knew her. May her memory bring comfort to all who mourn her passing.
