November 13, 2025

BUTLER - Sanford Courtner, age 79, of Butler, Tennessee passed away on Thursday, November 13, 2025 at Mountain City Care Center. He was born August 9, 1946 to the late Pansy Parlee Courtner. In addition to his mother he was preceded in death his sister, Edith Poore and an infant brother.

Sanford was an avid sportsman he loved hunting and fishing his entire life. He loved his home place in Butler it was his favorite place to be. Sanford also loved watching old westerns and his animals especially his dogs. He never met a stranger and enjoyed visiting at Pleasants Store talking to everyone he saw. He was also a very good small engine mechanic.

He was a member of Butler Masonic Lodge and attended Rock Springs Baptist Church when he was able.

Those left to cherish his memories include his daughter, Crissy Whaley and husband Patrick; sons, Shannon Courtner and wife Kimberly, Brandon Courtner and wife Lisa; grandchildren, Caleb Courtner, Cala Courtner, Tracey Hicks, Kaleb Walker, Evin Walker, Autumn Hicks, Mark Hefner, and Christian Hefner; sisters, Rosa Gentry and husband Frankie, Barbara Gentry, Jean Oliver, and Kathy Courtner; special niece and nephew like his children, Teresa Fox and Tom Poore; special friends, Tom Pass and Mike Church; mother of his children, Kathy Sluder Courtner; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 12-2:00 P.M. on Sunday, November 16, 2025 at Mountain City Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 P.M. with Pastor Shannon Courtner to officiate. A private family graveside service and burial will follow from the Courtner Family Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Tom Poore, Adam Courtner, Brad Gentry, Tracey Hicks, Kaleb Walker, and Evin Walker.
