Sarah C. Smith, a cherished matriarch and beacon of love, passed from this life August 19, 2025, at Columbus Regional Hospital. Born on August 31, 1929, in Glasgow, Kentucky, Sarah was the beloved daughter of the late Virgil and Cassie Glass Abner.
On January 29, 1943, Sarah married the love of her life, William G. Smith, with whom she built a beautiful life until his passing on January 9, 2006. Together, they raised a family that would be the center of Sarah's world. She is survived by her loving children, William (Diane) Smith of Greensburg, Kentucky, David (Kathy Stringer) Smith of North Vernon, Ronnie (Amy) Smith of Columbus, and Mary (Coy) Sluder of Campbellsville, Kentucky; son-in-law, Mike Crouch of Hope; brother, Billy (Linda) Abner of Seymour, and sister, Shirley Spradlin of Indianapolis. Sarah's life was also blessed with a multitude of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews who brought her immeasurable joy.
Sarah was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her children Michael Lee Smith, Gilliam Smith, Ruby Rafferty, and Lorrie Crouch, her brothers, Stanley, Harry, and Roger Abner, her sister Ruby Stevenson, and some of her grandchildren.
As a homemaker, Sarah created a warm and welcoming home where all were nurtured and cherished. Her hands were rarely still, as she found joy in tending to her garden and admiring the beauty of flowers.
A woman of faith, Sarah attended the Hope House of Prayer, her faith was an integral part of who she was and guided her through the many seasons of her life.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, August 25, 2025, at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street; Pastor Rick Leonard will officiate. Family and friends may gather for visitation from 1-4 p.m. Sunday and from 10 a.m. until service time Monday. Sarah will be laid to rest next to her husband at the Garland Brook Cemetery.
