Vernon Scott Barnes returned to his Heavenly Home on Jan. 15, 2026, where he was greeted by many family and friends who love him dearly.

Scott was born in Evanston, WY on Oct. 24, 1957, to Vernon and Marva Barnes. He grew up with his younger brother Craig, and was active in many sports, loved hunting, and had a taste for mischief and adventure. He graduated from Butte High School in Arco, Id. 

Scott attended ISU where he met and fell in love with Linda Green. They were married on Aug. 17, 1978. They built a home in Fort Hall where they welcomed 5 children over the next 10 years. Being a husband and father were Scott’s greatest joys and he worked hard to provide, teach, serve, and love his family. Scott served in several church callings in Fort Hall and they made many close friends in their ward there. 

In 1992, Scott and Linda were led to move to Menan, Idaho where they found their forever home and the best neighbors ever. He worked for the INL for many years facilitating emergency management and enjoyed his job and associates there. 

Scott shared his love of the outdoors with his family. Together they enjoyed water and snow skiing, camping, and Sunday drives in the mountains. He taught his kids how to shoot a gun and a basketball, how to set a volleyball and a tent, and how to love. 

Linda passed away in 2003, and Scott felt the loss of his companion very deeply. He and his family were blessed when he met Teresa Hegsted in 2005. Teresa breathed new life into Scott and they were married that year and succeeded in blending their lives and families together. 

Scott has a strong testimony of his Savior Jesus Christ and was a stalwart member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served for many years in scouting and loved working with the youth including as a much-loved Bishop at BYU-Idaho. 

Scott was a source of strength to all who knew him. He offered counsel without judgement, Dad- jokes when needed, and Christlike love to everyone he met. 

Scott spent the last few years accompanying Teresa around the country working on temples for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He loved working with her and their adventures together. 

He was proceeded in death by his parents Vernon and Marva Barnes, his first wife Linda and his grandson Linkon Campbell. 

His legacy is continued by his loving wife, their 9 children: Josh (Braden Baugh) Barnes, Tyler (Alyssa) Nielson, Nicole (Tim) Jones, Emily (Nathan) South, Amy (Braden) Briggs, Melissa (Tyler) Campbell, Lynlee (Rhett) Briggs, Bridger (Jayde) Barnes, Desiree (Brett) McPhail and their amazing 26 grandchildren. 

Funeral services will be held January 20, 2026 at the Menan Stake Center, 698 N 3600 N Menan, Idaho at 11:00 AM. A viewing for friends and family will be held at the church on January 19, from 6-7:30 PM. There will be an additional viewing Tuesday morning from 9:30-10:45. Following the 11:00 funeral service, burial will be at the Annis Little Butte Cemetery.
