Scott L. Lund, 73, of Boise, passed away on January 1, 2025. Scott was a restless child often challenged to sit still for even 5 minutes. Through determination, he showed that one could conquer this challenge and more in those five minutes, just as he would conquer so many challenges in life. His early accomplishments included being part of the Boise Kiwanis Boys Choir then later playing the trombone with a local jazz band Men in Blue. In 1971, while attending Boise State College, Scott had an opportunity to perform with a choir in Europe with his younger sister Cec. Scott would leave Boise State and in 1972, he and his younger brother Bruce responded to an ad in the local newspaper and moved to the family cabin in Lowman, Idaho where they both would begin their careers in logging. Scott would become a very skilled tree faller.

In early 1978, Scott was introduced to Geneal by her sister, and Geneal became the love of his life. He instantly became a parent as well, of two kids, one pre-teen and one just entering their teenage years. Scott handled this new role like a seasoned parent and his love for them was unconditional. Scott and Geneal went on to become part of the first group of volunteer EMTs in Lowman and in August 1980, Scott married Geneal at the family cabin, a marriage that would last until his passing 44 years later.

As teenagers, Scott’s stepchildren would follow Scott all over the mountains, carrying gas and oil for his chainsaw during the summer months. Scott, Geneal, and the kids had a wonderful, and sometimes challenging experience of spending an entire winter at the family cabin, with the only mode of transportation in or out being by snowmobile or cross-country skis. The family would go on to do a summer weekend hike to the Lost Lakes, and another summer hike in the Sawtooth Mountains for a week. For Scott, this was about sharing these experiences with his family. As his stepson Ray put it, Scott instilled in me a deep love for the outdoors from a young age, always taking me on camping trips and hikes, where he taught me to appreciate the beauty of nature and the thrill of exploration. His enthusiasm for adventure, whether it was navigating a challenging trail or simply sitting by a campfire, made me realize the joy of pushing my limits and connecting with the natural world, inspiring me to seek out my own outdoor experiences.

In 1981, Scott and his family moved to Boise where he returned to Boise State University and earned a degree in Environmental Science. His first job was working with Idaho DEQ where his job included responding to hazardous waste spills and performing inspections at the Idaho National Laboratory. Scott went on to work with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation as an Environmental Protection Specialist where he wrote the manual on managing and properly disposing of hazardous waste for the hydroelectric dams managed by the bureau in the western United States. It was a career that was a true passion and made an impact.

He was always restless and found ways to climb whatever mountain was there; whether it be Zumwalt or becoming an expert cross-country skier and cross-country ski patrol, a true river master having run the Grand Canyon, the Bruneau, and the yearly runs on the Salmon River starting with clearing out strainers in the spring and navigating the technical low water runs. Scott later developed a love affair with exploring the backroads and jeep trails of Idaho with his BMW GS motorcycle. He shared all his grand adventures with his children, family, and friends. Scott was a man of honor and the lessons he gave us will be with us for generations. As his niece Angie described him, Scott was steadfast, compassionate, wise, a good teacher, matter-of-fact, adventurous, outdoorsy, righteous, and intelligent.

Scott is survived by his wife Geneal, stepchildren Lavina and Raymond, sister Cecelia and her husband, and best friend of Scott since grade school, Doug, brother Bruce and his wife Evengeline, cousin Mike, and nieces and nephews Angela and her husband Hal, Allison, Jason and his wife Kara, and Casey.

Even though Scott is not here sitting in his favorite chair reading Discovery magazines, playing back-to-back games of Sudoku, or watching and sharing interesting or educational videos, his presence is very strong. Scott will always hold a special place in all our hearts and minds, but he will be greatly missed.

There will be a Celebration of Life in Boise for everyone who knew Scott. It will be held from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm, on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at Celebration Pavilion at Julia Davis Park, 670 Julia Davis Dr., Boise, Idaho 83702. Beer/wine is permitted. No glass containers. Dogs must be licensed and on a leash. Park map: https://www.cityofboise.org/media/17002/julia-davis-master-plan-rev_51123.jpg

After the Celebration of Life, family and close friends will get together at the family cabin in Lowman for a private ceremony.
