Selma Satel Obituary

Published by Porter Loring Mortuary North on Mar. 5, 2018.
Selma Aboud Satel died peacefully on Monday, March 5, 2018 in San Antonio, Texas, at the age of 104. The oldest of eight children, Selma was born to Lebanese immigrants Agnes and Jim Aboud on September 13, 1913 in Corpus Christi, Texas. Selma began working at the young age of nine and helped raise and even name her younger siblings. In 1931, she married Toffe Satel and moved to San Antonio, Texas, where she lived until her passing. She was thought to be the longest living resident of Alamo Heights. Selma and Toffe had five children. They operated dry cleaning and tailoring establishments on military bases throughout San Antonio before and during World War II, and later opened and operated Satel's Men's Clothing Stores. Selma Satel was a legend. She was a pioneer in the clothing industry, running a business at a time when it was unheard of for women to work outside the home. In honor of her 100th birthday, the city of Alamo Heights declared September 13, 2013 "Selma Satel Day." She also received a Businessperson of the Year Award from the City of Alamo Heights. Among customers, Selma's candy drawer was well known at Satel's. But Selma, whose greatest joy was cooking for her family, was best known for her cooking. Every Sunday, she would create a Lebanese feast for all to enjoy. She was also an avid bridge player and loved to travel. In her 104 years, she was able to see most of the world. Selma was preceded in death by her parents, Agnes and Jim Aboud; her husband, Toffe Satel; six of her siblings; her grandson, James Neal Blanton, Jr. and granddaughter, Christine Marie Deep. She is survived by her sister, Lillian Aboud Sharp of Corpus Christi, Texas, her children, Christine Satel Blanton, Careme Satel Deep (Tony), Jimmy Satel (Jane), Joe Satel and Toffe Satel (Sherry). She also will be missed by her grandchildren, Tracie Satel Beeler (Steven), John Blanton, Michael Deep M.D., Catherine Blanton Markette (Matt), Ashley Satel Robertson (Jay), Cindy Satel, Jim Satel (Kelly), Joey Satel (Linda) and Elizabeth Young (Barry); as well as by her great grandchildren, Christopher Allison, Matthew Markette, Natalie Markette, Brittany Robertson, Conley Robertson, Ava Satel, Caroline Satel, Emily Satel, Henry Satel, Joey Satel, Kate Satel, Isabel Young and Sophia Young. On behalf of the residents and staff of The Village at Incarnate Word, I want to express our sympathy to Mrs. Satel's family. I regret that we only learned of her death this week. It was our privilege to have her in our community shortly before she died. It was a hard transition for her, but I really admired your faithfulness in coming to help her try to adjust. She is with Jesus now - no more adjustments needed! I pray that your Easter will be blessed by knowing she is in the glory of our Risen Lord.

My sincere condolences to the Satel family and many friends of this remarkable lady. I worked at Satel's in Retail Sales as a young man in high school and college; one of my earliest professional experiences and a foundation for work habits and skills I would build upon forever. I can honestly say that Mrs. Satel was extremely influential in my development, personally and professionally. She was a tough boss and a remarkable business person. She taught me so much about Customer Service, sales skills, running a business and working with commitment and professionalism. We remained friends for years and always enjoyed our visits whenever I was in SA. Thank you "Ms. T!" I will miss you and never, ever forget you! -Alan Cohen, Austin, TX 3/12/18

My father Clem Titsworth used to fish with Joe Satel in a secluded location off the intracoastal canal in the Gulf of Mexico. These two men shared lots of life stories and enjoyed their time away from "civilization" and all its entrapment's and surely shared a cold beer or two. I'll never forget my dad talking about Joe Satel. Ms. Satel, may you rest in peace, it sounds like you had a positive effect on so many during your successful and long life's journey.

So sorry I couldn't be present physically for the service, as I now live outside the US. I just found out about Mrs. Satel's passing last night when a former co-worker posted the news on her Facebook feed. Mrs. Satel (or Mrs. T, as we used to call her) was simply a force of nature! She came to work almost daily all the time I worked at Satel's on Broadway, even though she was well into her 90s by then. The store--indeed, Alamo Heights--definitely won't be the same without her. Special condolences to Jimmy, Toffe and Joe and the rest of her family. And condolences as well to all Satel's employess, past and present, who had the pleasure of working with Mrs. T. She will be missed ...

Do not stand on her grave and weep. She is not there. She does not sleep. For she is a thousand winds that blow, and she is the diamonds of glistening snow. She is the sunlight on ripened grain. She is the gentle autumn rain. And when you awaken in the morning hush, she is the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight. She is the soft stars that shine at night. So do not stand on her grave and cry. She is not there. Selma Satel can never die. Miguel Juarez

Grandma Satel was one of the strongest, brightest, and beautiful souls I had the pleasure of knowing. She was never afraid to put me in my my place when I needed it most, but loved me unconditionally. The entire Satel Family is a tribute to her high standing personality and work ethic. I loved you very much and cannot wait to see you one day in eternal life.

Granny Satel was one of my favorites. There was always candy in her drawer at the store for the kids. What an incredible lady. I am honored to have known her for most of my life. Thank you for putting up with Jim and I running around the store when we were kids:) My best to you all.
