Sergio Alejandro Maya Godinez, 34, of Chicago's Rogers Park neighborhood passed away December 12, 2025..

Sergio Maya chased beauty and depth. He sought beauty in his friends and in the world. His life was filled with adventure. He always made plans for the next great adventure including his upcoming move to New York. Sergio didn't waste time with the details, he focused on the experiences he would have, the relationships he would build, and the marrow he would suck out of life.

Jack Kerouac's quote from his novel "On the Road" suit's Sergio's energy: "The only people for me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time, the ones who never yawn or say a commonplace thing, but burn, burn, burn like fabulous yellow roman candles exploding like spiders across the stars."

The accident that took his life followed an evening with friends. All that knew Maya can say that he was deeply loved and that he fully extracted everything he could from his time on this planet.

He will be deeply missed by his colleagues and friends at South of The Border Restaurant & Bar - Rogers Park. The community at Rogers Park Social has also lost a friendly patron.

Friends and family are gathering on Monday, December 15 from 5-10pm at South of the Border, 1416 W. Morse Ave., Chicago, 60626.

Memorial mass Wednesday, December 17, 6:30pm at St. Jerome Parish, 1709 W. Lunt Ave., Chicago. 60626.

Sergio Alejandro Maya Godinez, de 34 años, residente del barrio Rogers Park de Chicago, falleció el 12 de diciembre de 2025.

Sergio Maya buscaba la belleza y la profundidad. Encontraba belleza en sus amigos y en el mundo. Su vida estuvo llena de aventuras. Siempre hacía planes para la próxima gran aventura, incluyendo su próxima mudanza a Nueva York. Sergio no perdía el tiempo en los detalles; se centraba en las experiencias que viviría, las relaciones que construiría y en exprimir al máximo cada momento de la vida.

La cita de Jack Kerouac de su novela "En el camino" describe a la perfección la energía de Sergio: "Las únicas personas que me interesan son los locos, los que están locos por vivir, locos por hablar, locos por salvarse, los que lo desean todo al mismo tiempo, los que nunca bostezan ni dicen una banalidad, sino que arden, arden, arden como fabulosos fuegos artificiales amarillos que explotan como arañas en el cielo estrellado".

El accidente que le arrebató la vida ocurrió después de una noche con amigos. Todos los que conocieron a Maya pueden afirmar que era profundamente querido y que aprovechó al máximo cada instante de su vida.

Será profundamente extrañado por sus colegas y amigos del restaurante y bar South of The Border en Rogers Park. La comunidad de Rogers Park Social también ha perdido a un cliente muy apreciado.
