BIGELOW, ARKANSAS - Sergio De Leon, Sr., 82, passed away in Little Rock, Arkansas, on Monday, February 17, 2025.
Funeral Service: 10 a.m. Thursday, February 27, at All Saints Catholic Church, 214 N.W. 20th St.,
Fort Worth, TX 76164. The interment will take place at 2 p.m. on Thursday, February 27, at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery. A rosary will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, February 26, in Mount Olivet Chapel.
Sergio was born on January 31, 1943, in Torreón, Mexico, to Francisca Yanez Garcia and Fernando Medina De Leon. His family emigrated to the United States in 1949 and lived in the Houston area. Eventually, the family worked their way to Fort Worth. He graduated from Trimble Technical High School and went on to attend Tarrant County Junior College South Campus. He enlisted in the United States Army, and during the Vietnam War was stationed in Germany.
Upon his return, he worked briefly at A Brandt Furniture where he met the love of his life, Susana Santiago. After a few dates and a movie showing of "Dr. Zhivago" he popped the big question and they married on November 18, 1967, at All Saints Catholic Church.
Sergio's professional career began at Missouri & Pacific Railroad where he served as an electrician. He was a dedicated employee and in 1984, the railroad transferred him to Little Rock, Arkansas, where the family settled in the rural community of Bigelow, Arkansas. He was active in his community and served as an election poll worker for the Union Township in Perry County, Arkansas. Additionally, he volunteered with the Inaugural Committee for then, Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton, and went on to attend two Presidential Inaugural Balls in Washington, DC. He retired from Union Pacific Railroad at the age of 52.
Sergio was the happiest on the golf course where he spent many afternoons with friends and family on the back nine. He taught his grandchildren how to drive a ball and make the perfect putt. On a few occasions he would travel back to Fort Worth to watch the Colonial Golf Tournament. When he wasn't on the golf course, he was fishing, hunting deer, or deep-sea fishing. He was a loyal Dallas Cowboy fan! Win or lose, he cheered for "them boyz!"
Sergio was preceded in death by his parents, Francisca Yanez Garcia and Fernando Medina De Leon; brothers, Jesus de Leon, Robert de Leon, and Alexander Gonzales; sister, Graciela Gonzales; son, Johnny Briseño; and grandson, Richard Williams.
