Sergio Fernando Plaza, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, died peacefully of natural causes on Monday, July 28, 2025. He was 93 years old. He was preceded in death by his mother Ana B. Nevarez de Plaza, his father, Sergio Plaza Gutierrez, and his sisters Olga E. Plaza Guerra and Alma Plaza Cordova.

Sergio is survived by his wife of 65 years, Irma Alvarez de Plaza, his children Sergio Plaza and wife Karen, Irma Plaza McIver and husband Ross, Claudia Plaza Malcolm and husband Jeff and Marizza Plaza Teasley and husband Dana, along with 13 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren - he leaves a growing legacy.

Sergio was born in El Paso, Texas. He attended Cathedral High School, and received a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from Texas Western University, now the University of Texas at El Paso. He later obtained a Master's Degree from UTEP and also from the University of Missouri at Rolla. Sergio built his career around engineering, working as a civil servant for the Army Corp of Engineers for 30 years both at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico and at Fort Bliss, Texas. He held a Texas Professional Engineer's license, and was active in various professional engineering organizations. After his first retirement, he continued to work as a professional engineer in partnership with other engineers and eventually as part of his own consulting firm. He loved all aspects of his engineering career and often spoke about projects with great enthusiasm.

Sergio loved his family greatly, often commenting on the many blessings of his life. He was a man of faith. His gentle and kind approach was often combined with his dry sense of humor. He loved to learn and he loved to see the growth of his family. Through the challenges of his life, including surviving cancer, he remained positive.

A celebration of his life will occur on Wednesday, August 6th, 2025 at Perches Funeral Home, 6111 S. Desert Blvd. in El Paso, Texas. The memorial service will be from 10 am to 2 pm, with a family eulogy at 11 am.
