Sharon Lee (Rice) Jones, age 76, of Morgantown passed away peacefully at The Village at Heritage Point on December 14, 2023, after an extended illness.
Sharon was born in Parkersburg, West Virginia on July 22, 1947. She spent her years growing up in several towns across West Virginia, including St. Marys, Sistersville, Bridgeport, Morgantown, and Fairmont, as her father was a West Virginia State Police Officer who transferred many times during his career. Sharon graduated from West Fairmont High School in 1965.
Sharon is survived by her children, Amy E. Jones-Overfield (Robert) of Morgantown and Christopher T. Jones (Tara) of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She is also survived by several grandchildren: Collin Overfield of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Lilly and Jack Overfield of Morgantown; and Eliana, Nathaniel, and Joshua Jones of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
In addition, she is survived by her brothers David Rice (Linda) of Wilmington, North Carolina, and Michael Rice (Jane) of Parkersburg, West Virginia; and several nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
Sharon was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Robert Jones, and her parents Edgell and Erin Rice.
Upon graduating from St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Parkersburg, West Virginia in 1968, Sharon worked as a Registered Nurse throughout her career and most recently retired from West Virginia Medical Institute. Over her nursing career, she also worked for a family practitioner, Mon General Hospital, WVU Hospital and the Mon County Health Department. Sharon took great pride in her work as a nurse, caring for people with respect and dignity. Her family also knew she was the first person to call when someone was in need of trusted medical advice.
In addition to caring for her patients, Sharon loved her four-legged friends and had several dogs and cats and fostered others over the years who just needed a home. She loved her grand pets, Peggy, Cody and Thomas, making sure their needs were met with special blankets, bedding, and treats. Sharon, also known as Nana, loved her grandkids and spent many hours babysitting them and attending their sporting events and activities. When she wasn't loving on her pets and grandkids, Sharon enjoyed listening to music, watching her favorite television programs, and following the Mountaineers.
In accordance with her wishes, Hastings Funeral Home will provide cremation services and a private memorial service will be held by Sharon's family at a later date. The family would also like to recognize the excellent staff at The Village at Heritage Point, Amedisys, and Home Instead as well as Michelle Cool. They went above and beyond their professional duties in caring for her, particularly at the later stages of her life.
In memory of Sharon, please consider donating to a no-kill animal shelter or Humane Society in your area of residence.
