Shawn Turner Obituary

Shawn L. Turner
Edwardsville - Shawn L. Turner, age 59, of Edwardsville, IL, passed away on Monday, February 17, 2025, in St. Louis, MO. Shawn was born on January 12, 1966, in St. Louis, MO, the son of Jack and Carolyn (Shaw) Turner.
Shawn accepted Jesus Christ at an early age, was baptized, and remained a strong believer in Jesus Christ.
Shawn attended St. Louis public schools from kindergarten through his sophomore year of high school where some of his classes were in the gifted program. For his junior and senior years, he attended Edwardsville High School, where he was a good student, excelling as a multisport athlete in football, wrestling and track before graduating in 1984.
Shawn received a football scholarship to play at the University of Illinois and graduated with a bachelor's degree in kinesiology. Following graduation, he worked various jobs and volunteered with the River Bluff Girl Scouts between 1988 and 2015. He received a bachelor's degree in biology from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in 1995 and took a job at the Edwardsville YMCA where he eventually became the senior fitness center director. After 20 years at the YMCA, Shawn earned his nursing degree from Maryville University in 2015. Shawn had worked for Gateway Regional Medical Center, John Cochran VA Medical Center, and was currently working at The Rehab Institute of St. Louis.
Shawn's recreational pursuits included listening to music of various genres, dancing and sharing with loved ones videos of himself dancing on Facebook, his life-long love of reading, especially science fiction, watching foreign movies, and avidly participating in gaming.
Shawn loved his family, especially his children. He was proud of them for, Alexus' courageous handling of her life long health challenges, her strong work ethic and her tremendous knowledge of many genres of music; Linnea's being an honor student throughout her school career and an accomplished violinist; Joshua's getting good grades and eagerness to learn new things.
Besides his parents, left to cherish his memory are his three children, Alexus Turner, of Edwardsville, IL, Linnea Turner, of Urbana, IL, and Joshua Turner, of Edwardsville, IL; a brother, Dwane Turner, of Edwardsville; his fiancée, Cathy Weeks, of Fenton, MO; and many other family and friends.
A visitation will be held on March 1 at St. John's United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. A service will follow at 12 p.m. at St. John's United Methodist Church with Rev. Walker Walker presiding. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Edwardsville. Condolences may be expressed online at weberfuneralhome.com. Shawn had a respectful demeanor to his patients and was requested by them. He was a tough nurse to follow because he was so highly regarded by his clients. They always seemed disappointed when he had a day off. Janis Kerberick RN

Sending our heartfelt sympathies to the family of my good friend Shawn L. Turner. Shawn was always competitive growing up, he challenged me in wrestling a few times. Lol
The last time I was home, we did get the chance to see him and talk with him for while. Prayers to the family. He will be missed.

As a nurse with Shawn, I vividly remember when bed alarms were first utilized. The first alarm sounded in the back hallway Shawn jumped over the nurses´s station counter with ease, raced down the hall at his lightning speed and prevented an elderly patient from falling. He was kind, caring and a tough act to follow as a nurse. Too bad they discouraged his kind of rapid response

I had had spinal surgery and was going to Meyer Y to walk on the walking track and work out on machines in the fitness center. Shawn was always so attentive and helpful to me. After he left the Y, I would run into him at the library and other
places. He always greeted me with the smile and was so glad to see me. I am so glad that God had our paths cross.

You have my deepest sympathy. I met Shawn kind of by accident, through a friend, helping to repair a house. After meeting him, I immediately thought of his father Jackie, who knows me from wrestling in high school. My condolences to you and family. It is hard to lose a son. Your son was a great tribute to you my friend . I very much enjoyed the time I had with him, as he reminded me so much of you. God bless.

Shawn came into my life decades ago at a time when I was already dealing with loss.
We immediately connected not only as friends, but as he often said, more as brothers.

He was (and is) one of the most unique & special individuals I have had the privilege of knowing and sharing a good portion of my life with.
To our family, he became almost an extension of our own family.

To my own wife and I he was like a reliable, funny, smart, strong big brother.
The three of us we´re close enough that Shawn was comfortable seeking counsel with my wife and I he ever had anything heavy on his mind - just as I was with him, if there was anything I needed for someone to talk to, Shawn would always make time to talk and check in -
".... to see how things are going with you all´".

To our children, he was like an uncle.
Through all of the many different holidays and family gatherings over the years Shawn was a big part of so many of them.

Just as he had us a part of many of his own family gatherings.
So that his own parents, as well as his children became like family to us.

The greatest loving compliment he gave to my wife and I was asking us to be godparents to he & Marie´s beautiful son, Joshua.
And has been absolute joy watching him grow these last seven years.

This was all because of Shawn walking up to me one day at the gym, where we start up a conversation.

I am so incredibly heartbroken and sad that I lost my best friend.
But I am equally sad for his parents and children, and Kathy.

He was truly any irreplaceable soul, and I will be grieving the loss of my best friend for the rest of my own life, but I´m so happy for his having been here, enriching my life, and my families lives in ways it would not have been without him.

We love you Shawn

Rest easy my friend
