Sheila Funderburk Courtney, born to Alfred and Nancy Funderburk on July 23, 1952, in Monroe, N.C., passed away on May 31, 2024. She spent most of her life in Pageland, S.C.
Sheila was married to her high school sweetheart, Gary Courtney, for 50 years and has now rejoined him in eternity. Together, they raised four children and were blessed with seven grandchildren.
Sheila graduated from Pageland High School in 1970 and later earned a Nursing degree from Anson Technical College. While her main vocation was nursing, she also served in ministry alongside her husband for nearly 30 years. The couple is fondly remembered for their hospitality, always opening their home to those in need and ensuring there was always room for one more at their table.
Sheila was preceded in death by her brother, Hurley Alfred Funderburk III; her husband, Gary Donald Courtney and her oldest son, F. Shannon Courtney.
She is survived by her daughters, Jo Anna Statz (Craig Statz) and Angel Cope (Ben Cope); her son, Michael Courtney and her grandchildren, Emily Aldmon (Chris Aldmon), Sydney Statz, Anna Cope, Olivia Statz, Lucas Cope, Sawyer Statz, and Tristan Cope.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, June 7th, at Memorial Baptist Church, 873 Pee Dee Avenue, Norwood, N.C. 28128 with Pastor Jon Ferguson officiating. A graveside gathering will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park of Pageland in Pageland, S.C. at 3 PM, including a short time of scripture and prayer. All are welcome, and the family will be available for visitation at that time.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
Arrangements are entrusted to Baumgartner Funeral Home of Pageland, South Carolina (www.baumgartnerfh.com).
