Sheila A. Marshall, 85, passed away Sunday, September 14, 2025 at Memorial Hospital.
Sheila was born on April 11, 1940 in Elyria, Ohio to Frederick and Marie (Weston) McGuire. She first graduated from Elyria Catholic High School after achieving a place in the National Honor Society, as valedictorian. Then, she attended and graduated from the MB Johnson School of Nursing in 1961. Sheila worked as a registered nurse in private practice at hospitals around Elyria, Ohio until joining the United States Army in 1966. After joining the Army, Sheila quickly obtained the rank of Captain and was able to serve overseas during the Vietnam War, attending to the wounded in Okinawa, Japan. Sheila often downplayed her role in the Army, but the stories that were told by her friends, other officers, and fellow nurses spoke of her dedication and steadfastness in the time of crisis. This ability to keep a cool head when all others were losing theirs remained throughout her life. She saved many lives, and was remembered by doctors and others she worked and served with as a person who not only stepped up to the job, but got it done.
During her time in the Army, she had a rotation at Fort Belvoir, where a young Marine Corps captain, John Marshall, was also stationed. Young Captain Marshall appeared on Sheila's doorstep to escort her roommate on a date, but the roommate was already out. Captain Marshall asked Sheila to accompany him to dinner and a life-long match was made. The two were wed on November 10, 1967 in Honolulu, Hawaii. The couple and their growing family would travel over the world for the next thirty years, living in places including Hawaii, Virgina, Okinawa, and Georgia, before John retired to
South Bend, Indiana. The time spent traveling courtesy of the United States Marine Corps was used to its best ability as Sheila and John took the opportunity to travel to as many places as possible while overseas. The family was able to see Hong Kong, Korea, Taiwan, China, and Japan, as well as traveling to locations within the United States. After John retired, Sheila and John greatly enjoyed being able to spend many hours together, gently bickering about the crossword and reading together with enthusiasm.
Sheila was a woman of strong opinions, strong character, and strong words (when needed). She was an ardent animal lover, but she held a special place in her heart for orange cats and shaggy dogs. She loved her grandchildren more than can ever be expressed and was a monument of strength and inspiration for her children. She was the backbone of her family and will be missed in perpetuity.
Sheila's beloved husband John died on September 20, 2020, with Sheila at his side. Sheila was also proceeded in death by a daughter, Brigid Mary Marshall, and two brothers, James McGuire and William McGuire.
Surviving are a daughter, Katherine (Sean) Marshall of Indianapolis, a son, Michael (Meredith) Marshall of Cincinnati, and 6 grandchildren and three brothers Frederick (Rosann) McGuire, David McGuire, and Henry (Beth) McGuire.
Viewing will take place Saturday, October 4, 2025 in St. Matthew Cathedral from 8:30-9:30am. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 9:30am. Burial with military honors will follow in Southlawn Cemetery.
