Shelba Sexton

Shelba Jean Wood Sexton, 86, of Calhoun, Georgia, passed away on Monday, December 18, 2023. She was born on November 17, 1937, to the late Floreen Wood and raised by her aunt Lois Wood. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Herchel Sexton, who passed on February 28, 2023.

Shelba was an active member of New Town Baptist Church where she worked countless hours in the fellowship hall preparing meals for church members and guest and tending their souls with love and compassion.  Shelba also dedicated her heart to the youth of the Red Bud community, making sure the kids could participate in sports all while working a full-time job and raising her family.  Her favorite hobbies were raising a big garden with her husband, working in in her flower garden, and watching her grandkids play ball.  She enjoyed spending time with her church family and loving her children and grandchildren.

Shelba is survived by her sons, Doug Sexton (Lisa), Donnie Sexton (Denese), and Daryl Sexton (Leslie); daughter, Pam Abernathy (Bryan); grandchildren, Brittany, Ashley, Natalie, Bo, Carla, Dena, Jax, Maggy, Tori, Katie, and Dayne; thirteen great-grandchildren; special friends, Judy Hall, Sue Morris, Margie Edwards, Jean Holden, and all the ladies from her Sunday School class.  Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 21, 2023, from 12:00 Noon until 3:00 PM at New Town Baptist Church.

The funeral service will be held Thursday, December 21, 2023, at 3:00 PM from New Town Baptist Church with Donnie Sexton, Rev. Brandon Bishop, and Jonathan Langford officiating. Burial will follow in Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers are Dayne Sexton, Dalyn Harris, Jax Abernathy, Chris Mast, Donnie Sexton, and Bo McEntyre. Honorary pallbearers are Marvin McBee, Max Burgess, Sam Burgess, Jason Epperson, Gunnar Pullen, Mac Fox, the 1955 class of Red Bud High School, and the Ruth’s Senior Ladies Sunday School Class.  The New Town Quartet will be in charge of music.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to New Town Baptist Church for their Mission Giving food boxes for local families in need.  Donations can be mailed to the church at 897 New Town Church Rd NE, Calhoun, Georgia, 30701.
