Shelby Jean Clemmer Harvell, age 87, passed away peacefully on January 29, 2026, at Terrace Ridge Assisted Living. Born on February 14, 1938, in Gaston County, NC, Shelby spent her life surrounded by family and community, dedicating herself to her loved ones and her faith.
In her professional journey, Shelby retired from Bell South after many wonderful years. After her retirement she worked at the Gaston County Public Library, where she fostered a love for learning and books. She later took great pride in her role at Bethlehem Church (City Church), where she not only worked but also formed many lasting friendships that enriched her life. She also was active in the women’s ministry and serving on the bereavement committee.
Shelby was a beloved member of her family; she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and mother-in-law. . Her proudest accomplishments were her children, whom she cherished profoundly. She is survived by her sons, Roger (Sharon) Harvell, and Eric (Tammy) Harvell; and her wonderful grandchildren, Monica and Jacob. She also leaves behind her brother, Don (Sandra) Clemmer, and a sister, Patsy Crisp, along with numerous nieces, nephews and many wonderful friends.
Her childhood and youth were shaped by the love and guidance of her parents, Cullen Lewis Clemmer and Shirley Mullis Clemmer. Shelby faced the heartbreak of losing her beloved husband of 63 years, Bobby Lee Harvell, and she mourned the passing of her son, Brian Keith Harvell, and her grandson, Austin Ivy Harvell. Shelby also remembered her sisters, Ruth Ann Lavender, Faye Wylie, and Becky Clemmer, who have all gone before her.
Known for her loving nature, Shelby enjoyed gardening and nurturing her flowers. Reading was another of her great passions, but above all, her heart was devoted to studying and reading the Bible, reflecting her deep faith and commitment. She relished the time shared with her family, creating cherished memories that will be remembered by all who knew her. Shelby enjoyed her friends at Terrace Ridge, often playing bingo and different games. She also enjoyed her exercise classes. She was active in the Pioneer's at Bell South for many years.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate her life during visitation on Thursday, February 5, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Withers & Whisenant Funeral Home and Cremation, located at 2916 Union Road, Gastonia, NC, 28054. A Celebration of Life will be on Friday, February 6, 2026, at 11:00 AM, at the same location with Pastor Dickie Spargo and Pastor Dale Lawing officiating. Burial will follow at Hollywood Cemetery.
Shelby will be deeply missed by all who knew her, and her legacy of love and kindness will continue through her family and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to City Church, 3100 City Church Street, Gastonia, NC 28056 or VIA Health Partners, PO Box 470408,Charlotte, NC 28247
