Sheldon Lee Beattie was born on September 3, 1946 in Dawson to Gordon and Murriel (Shaffer) Beattie. He was baptized at Antelope Hills Church of Christ, Canby in 1969 and attended school in Dawson, MN. He joined the United States Army in 1966, earning his diploma in Single Rotor Helicopter Maintenance and served in the 129th Assault Helicopter Company in Vietnam. He was united in marriage with his former wife Bonnie Martin in 1968 and together they had three children, Shannon, Shellene, and Sherra. The family made their home in Dawson and Minneapolis. In his early years, Sheldon worked as a salesman for Kirby Vacuum Company and later working for Pizza Shack in Minneapolis for more than 20 years prior to his retirement and returning to Dawson/Madison. He married Melody Hunt in 1982.
Sheldon was a man of many hobbies and interests. He loved frequenting thrift stores and was a collector of many things. He was passionate about photography, aviation and music. He would teach his children photography and how to develop their own pictures in his darkroom in his home. You could always find Sheldon with a camera in hand, capturing city landscapes, scenic country sides and of course his family. He enjoyed attending airshows with his family and friends and had a great knowledge of aircrafts. He enjoyed playing and collecting guitars and other unique musical instruments. You could often find him tinkering, fixing or reinventing anything mechanical. He always had a joke for his family and friends and never took life to seriously.
Sheldon is survived by his children: Shannon (Kelly) Beattie, Montevideo, Shellene Beattie, Monticello, Sherra Beattie, Florida; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; siblings: Marsha (Mark) Schutte, Dawson, Kim(Grace) Beattie Bellingham; brother-in-law, Gary Nederhoff, Rochester; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; spouse, Melody Beattie; sister: Karen Nederhoff; sister and brother-in-law, Shelby and Dave Borstad.
The family of Sheldon Beattie would like to extend a special thank you to the Montevideo Veterans Home, hospice staff, nurses and caregivers for their kindness, care and compassion shown to Sheldon and his family during this time.
