Sherman Anderson Obituary

Published by Sneider & Sullivan & O’Connell’s Funeral Home and Cremation Service on Feb. 21, 2016.
Sherman Edward Anderson, III was born on January 11, 1935 in Little Rock, Arkansas to the union of William Anderson, Sr. and Irma Winfrey Anderson. His wife, Betty Cato Anderson, brother, William Anderson, Jr., and both parents preceded him in death. He attended public schools in Little Rock, Arkansas having graduated from Dunbar High School and Dunbar Junior College. He was soon drafted into the United States Army. Upon completing his tour of duty in Germany, he moved to San Francisco, California. Upon arrival in San Francisco, Sherman enrolled in the University of San Francisco, where he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology and Master of Science Degree in Counseling. For two and a half years he worked for Parks Job Corp Center and Department of Social Services. He was employed 27 years with San Francisco School District in Administration and Counseling. The family attended Collins Street Baptist Church where Sherman was baptized at an early age. Even though Sherman began his dedication to Christ at the age of six, he continued his Christian Education for many more years. Some of his attributes included but not limited to speaking, mentoring youth and doing Christian work. In 1977, he united with Pilgrim Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend John Cooper. In 1978, Reverend Larry W. Ellis encouraged Sherman to remain at Pilgrim and become a Deacon where he served in this position for Twenty-Three years. Sherman's many accomplishments included: Co-Director of Christian Education Ministry, Sunday School Teacher, former President of Bay Area Baptist District Association – Laymen, Sunday School Superintendent and others too numerous to mention. Even though Sherman and Betty didn't have children of their own, they shared their love with nieces, nephews and God Children. Sherman had a passion for music, bowling, photography, traveling and a great sense of humor; telling jokes, old or new was his favorite past time. Most of all, Sherman loved doing the Lord's work. Sherman will be missed by his siblings, sisters Catherine Cunningham, Bernice Crawford, Mildred Brown (William), brothers, Jesse Anderson (Pauline), Berry Anderson, the Love of his life, and special caregiver Mary Slade, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, Church Family and Many Friends. Family and friends may visit Wednesday March 2nd from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM at Sneider, Sullivan & O'Connell's Funeral Home at 977 S. El Camino Real, San Mateo, 94402. The funeral service will be celebrated Thursday March 3rd at 11AM at Pilgrim Baptist Church at 217 North Grant Street, San Mateo. The burial will take place on Friday March 4th at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery. Sherman, We Love You More!
