Sherman Eugene Smith, age 93, of Trenton, Georgia, passed away peacefully at his home on January 9, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
Sherman was born on February 29, 1932, to the late Marshall Eli and Anna Grant Smith. He was the last surviving member of nine siblings.
A man who never shied away from honest labor, Sherman worked faithfully for most of his life. He was a cattle farmer who spent countless hours in the hayfields and was widely known for his remarkable mechanical skills. Sherman operated his own tractor repair business for many years. Folks from near and far would bring their tractors to him, knowing he could fix just about anything. His hands were skilled, his mind sharp, and his work ethic unwavering.
Sherman was a man of faith and a member of Straightway Baptist Church. His life reflected quiet strength, humility, and a steadfast belief in doing what was right.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 28 years, Wilma Hughes Smith; his stepfamily, including his daughter, Debra Daniel Steward; his grandson, Shane (Shelly) Cloud; his great-grandson, Saxon (Kathrine) Cloud; and his great-great-granddaughter, Mirriam Kate Cloud. He is also survived by his honorable son, Ed Holmes, along with several nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will cherish his memory.
In addition to his parents, Sherman was preceded in death by his first wife, Elsie Smith; his daughter, Barbara Ann Smith; his brothers Leslie, Charles, Herman, Alvin, Elmer, and D.J. Smith; and his sisters Louise Smith and Mildred Chapman.
A funeral service to honor and celebrate Sherman’s life will be held on Monday, January 12, 2026, at 1:00 PM at the Larry Moore Memorial Chapel of Moore Funeral Home, with Brother Jimmy Hixon and Pastor Waylon Miller officiating. He will be laid to rest at Gibdock Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 1:00 PM until 5:00 PM, and again on Monday from 11:00 AM until the service hour.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Amedisys Hospice for their compassionate care and support during this time.
