Sherry Bowers, 69, of Mesa, Arizona, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, in Mesa surrounded by her sons and daughter-in-law.
Born June 19, 1955, in Galesburg, Illinois, Sherry was the eldest child of James Bybee and Margaret Rice. She is survived by her parents, Mike and Margaret Rice; brothers James Bybee, Terrence Bybee; sister Amy Rice; sons John and Bryan (Catrina) Bowers; granddaughters Aubrey, Fiona, Carly, and Madison Bowers; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, James Bybee.
Sherry dedicated her life to serving others. After years as a homemaker, she embarked on a fulfilling career with the Galesburg School District, holding various roles before finding her passion as a paraprofessional and later at the YMCA.
Known for her vibrant personality, Sherry valued her friendships and was always ready for an adventure. Her zest for life extended to her travels, taking her around the world. She was affectionately known as the "dancing queen" for her love of music and movement.
Sherry cherished her family above all else. She would often surprise everyone with a silly dance or a spontaneous rendition of her favorite song from the 70s collection, her favorite decade. During school breaks, she would eagerly anticipate spending time with her children and grandchildren in Arizona, reading stories, playing board games, and indulging in her famous apple pie.
In 2019, Sherry was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. With unwavering courage and a positive spirit, she made the decision to move to Arizona to be closer to her children. During this challenging journey, Sherry was surrounded by love and respect, receiving dedicated care from her children. Sherry and her daughter-in-law, Catrina, formed a special bond as they navigated the challenges of Alzheimer's together. Sherry's laughter remained infectious, and she continued to cherish family gatherings, particularly enjoying pillow fights with her grandchildren. Despite the challenges of the disease, Sherry maintained a remarkable spirit and faced her diagnosis with grace and dignity. She was treasured by her family for her unwavering love, her infectious laughter, and her ability to find joy in every moment.
Sherry will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, February 2nd from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Bryan and Catrina Bowers, for family and friends to share memories and celebrate Sherry's life.
