Sherry Ann McCarthy, 46, passed away peacefully on July 8, 2025, surrounded by her devoted husband, children, and closest friends, after a courageous year-long battle with cancer.

Born Sherry Golden on August 12, 1978, at Mercy Hospital in Watertown, NY, she was the beloved youngest child and only daughter of Morris and Jean Golden of Cape Vincent. Sherry grew up bright, adventurous, and inquisitive; traits that would define her life and legacy.

A proud graduate of Thousand Islands High School, Sherry went on to attend Jefferson Community College and earned her Bachelor's degree from SUNY Cortland and Master's degree from SUNY Potsdam. She dedicated her professional life to teaching in the Watertown and Alexandria Bay schools and recently to the Thousand Islands Central School District inspiring and nurturing students. Teaching was her love and life's purpose. Her energy, and commitment to her students left a lasting mark on children and colleagues alike.

On July 7, 2001, Sherry married the love of her life, Matthew McCarthy, at St. Patrick's Church in Watertown, NY. Together, they built a life full of laughter, love, and family travels.

Sherry was the heart of her family and is survived by her husband of 24 years, Matthew, and their three cherished daughters: Abigail, Cadence, and Ryley; her mother Jean Golden, and her brothers Jerry (Buffy) Golden and Perry (Cathy) Golden. She was predeceased by her father Morris. She also leaves behind the family's beloved dogs, who brought her joy and comfort throughout her life.

Sherry's world revolved around her family, her students, her friends, and her pets. She was known for her warmth, her boundless energy, and the way she made others feel unrequited love and endless support. Sherry's sense of humor, and light hearted sarcasm was legendary and continues on through her daughters' wit. Her absence will be deeply felt by all who were blessed to know her, but her legacy of love and strength will live on through her family, her friends, and her students.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday July 15 beginning at 1PM at the United Church of Cape Vincent in Cape Vincent, NY. A funeral is planned for Wednesday July 16 at the same church at 11 AM. A celebration of life and gathering for anyone wishing to attend will be held at O'Brien's Restaurant in Clayton, NY beginning approximately at 1 PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Sherry's memory to the Jefferson County SPCA in tribute to her lifelong love of animals.
