Sherwin Kent "Nick" Schrag, of Broomfield, Colorado died peacefully Saturday, November 9, 2024,after a brief illness. He was 83. Nick lived a life full of love, family and friendships, and will be deeply missed.

Born August 7, 1941,  to Waldo M. and Leona K. Schrag, Nick grew up on a farm in the small Mennonite community of Moundridge, Kansas alongside his older sister Barbara and younger brother Pete.  After graduating from Moundridge High School in 1959, Nick performed his alternative service at Colorado Psychopathic Hospital. He graduated from Wichita State University in 1969 with a degree in elementary education.

Following graduation, Nick accepted a position with the Boulder Valley School District. He spent the majority of his 33-year career at Broomfield Heights Middle School (BHMS) teaching science before retiring in 2005 from Aspen Creek. He was known both by his students and the teaching community for his ability to make science relevant and fun and for inspiring boys and girls in their scientific pursuits.

He settled in Boulder where his daughter Holly was born in 1972 and remained near there until he moved to Broomfield in 2001. He met the love of his life, Belinda, while teaching at BHMS in 1992. They fell in love and were married in 2001. They lived the fairytale - exploring the world through travel, skiing, creating a home together, and mentoring Belinda's three children, Brianna, Brandon and Bryan. He was a wonderful father-figure for them. Nick and Belinda often said 'We saved the BEST for last!"

Nick and Belinda continued to travel in retirement throughout much of the US and its territories, but also abroad, including a Baltic cruise, Costa Rica, Australia, New Zealand, and most recently, Italy. Nick also loved all kinds of fishing, from deep sea fishing off the Florida coast to the lakes of North Carolina and Nebraska, and the lakes and  mountain streams of Colorado. Family and friends were always involved.

Skiing was a life-long passion for Nick, as well. He and Belinda traveled throughout the US and Canada to pursue their shared love of skiing. He was often fond of quoting John Muir, "The mountains are calling, and I must go". He imparted his deep love of the sport onto his daughter and his grandsons. Along with frequent visits to the East Coast, he left them with many memories for which they will be forever grateful.

Likewise, Nick was adored by his younger grandchildren in Colorado and shared many good times with them like sledding, kite flying, fishing, camping, and playing board and card games.

Nick is survived by his wife, Belinda; his daughter, Holly Cohoon, her husband Chris, and his grandsons Aaron and Aidan; his step-daughter Brianna Hallinan and her husband Tim; his step-son Brandon Harp, his wife Jessica, and his grandchildren McKenna, Jameson and Emerson; his step-son Bryan Harp; his sister Barbara Stucky; his brother Pete Schrag and his wife Debra, and many friends and extended family members who will miss him dearly.

A memorial service will be held at Broomfield United Methodist Church on Thursday, December 19 at 2:30 p.m.
