Shimia Nord Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 17, 2025.
Shimia Nord passed away peacefully on September 15th 2025, lovingly surrounded by her parents, siblings and boyfriend. Shimia was born to Faith Nord and Brian T. Calhoun on October 29th 2006. Since age 8, she lived with her chosen mother, Rikelle Hendrickson, and was encompassed by a vast collective of family and friends on all sides of her families who loved her beyond measure. Shimia had a deep passion in her heart for dance and lived some of her best moments with her dance family on the Duluth East Dance team and Just for Kix studio; she always considered her teammates and coaches as her second family and greatly appreciated their continued love and support. Shimia was a hard worker with a gift of kindness and compassion, especially toward children. She worked at Keyzone for four years and cherished her time with the students, always willing to help them in any way possible. Shimia excelled in school and graduated from Duluth East High School in 2025 with the distinction of earning many college credits. She was accepted to all 15 colleges she applied to; she was proud of her years of hard work and academic accomplishments, determined to chase her destiny of a bright future. But God had other plans and called her home early. Shimia was able to light up any room with her infectious smile and positive attitude. She was always able to make a joke to brighten your day or get out of an uncomfortable conversation. She has made such a remarkable impact on so many people and will be truly missed. We will all watch for the signs she has promised us and know she is continuing to watch over us. Shimia is survived by her parents, Rikelle Hendrickson, Brian T. (Queenetta) Calhoun and Faith Nord, siblings Vernon Hayes III, Cameron Hendrickson, Keysha Jaques-Calhoun, Deon Hendrickson, Zianni Calhoun and Brian X. Calhoun and her loving boyfriend Ben Heffernan. Additionally, a large collective of extended biological and chosen family and many friends will keep Shimia's memory alive in their hearts. The family is grateful for the professional care given to Shimia during her stays at Minnesota Children's Hospital and Solvay Hospice House. Shimia requested no funeral or memorial service but instead a celebration of life to be held at Clyde Iron Works on September 28, 2025 from 2-4pm. Please join the family for light refreshments and conversation. In lieu of flowers the family requests that you consider making a donation to the Northern Lights Foundation in Shimia's name to support her legacy.

I met Shimia on the first day of seventh grade english. I had no friends in the class and didn´t know who to talk to, she immediately walked up to me and started talking. For the rest of the year every time I walked in the room I was greeted with her smile. Shimia lit up every room she walked into, she was supportive, kind, and so brave. She continued to be a friend through high school even when I switched schools and we always caught up when we saw each other. This is a photo from the last night we talked. I will never forget her bright presence and her hugs. I love you forever. -Gigi

A lot of my memories with Shimia are when we were children, she was always smart and also strong resilient no matter what, she liked spicy stuff when we were younger I did not but I didn´t want to let her out do me so I would try and eat spicy stuff but she did it with ease and I thought that was so cool. She has always been so cool I love you Shimia rest well

Shimia had a positive impact on so many lives, including my own. When I started my first ever job as a Freshman in high school she was the one who trained me in, her kindness and patience in that moment is something I will never forget. I wouldn´t have asked for anyone else. She´s the sweetest girl, I will love and appreciate her forever.

Shimia was my dance team big sister. She gave me rides in 8th grade and 9th grade to every practice and she would always give the best advice without even realizing she was giving it. Being a JV Jazz captain and dancing with her was an amazing experience. She taught me to live and love proudly and that life is too short to worry about the small things. I looked up to her so much and still do. Even though I wasn´t one of her close friends she still made a big impact on my life and dance journey. I will think of her every time I go on stage and I know that she will be dancing with me.

I´ll always remember your smile, your laugh, and the way you lit up every room you walked into. Even in the middle of your battle, you showed so much strength, grace, and love. You taught me and others what it means to be brave, to keep going no matter what, and to love people deeply.

I´m grateful for every memory we made together the silly moments, the hard talks, the laughs, and the times you reminded me everything would be okay. I will carry those memories in my heart forever.

Shimia was one of the best friends anyone could´ve asked for. She ALWAYS put others before herself and had the biggest heart ever. She was always the one person to check up on everyone else even though she was suffering. She was never afraid to show her true, funny, crazy self. When I say she lit up every room she stepped in, she seriously did. She never failed to make anyone laugh. I will forever cherish the beautiful memories and moments I got to share & spend with her. This morning, Billie Eilish was playing in my class when I walked in & if you know Shimia, she loved to sing Billie to all of us. I love you forever Mimi

she was truly a leader and a blessing to anyone who met her. I looked up to her as an older sister. I couldve seen her more and talked to her more.

Shimia is one of a kind! While she was only with you for a short time, she leaves such an impact on those in her life.
My favorite memories include hearing her squeals and giggles when she was excited about something!
