Shirley Clain Obituary

Shirley Ann (Nanny) Clain

October 22, 1937 - February 16, 2025

Wichita, Kansas - Shirley Ann (Nanny) Clain, 87, of Wichita, passed away Sunday, February 16, 2025, after a very short, devastating illness. She was surrounded by her family at her home the last two weeks of her life. Ten of those days were spent laughing and enjoying life as the family loved on her. On behalf of her family, we are all very grateful for that time. We all loved her so much and she will be sorely missed.

Shirley met her husband, Barry W. Clain Sr. in 1953, and were married at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wichita. The two were blessed with four children, Barry Jr., Terry (Mindy), and Robert, all three of Wichita, and Cheryl (Mark) Kelly, of Conway Springs, Kansas.

Shirley was born on October 22, 1937, in Dardanelle, Arkansas, to William "Bill" Nanny and Lola R. Nanny. Shirley is preceded in death by both parents; brothers, Norbin, Jimmy, Gary, Larry; and sisters, Betty Rodriquez and Inez Wilson.

She is survived by sister, Pam Vyff (Neil), of Wichita; all four of her children; six grandchildren, Mark Kelly Jr. (Tracy), and Crystal Hinnen (Travis), both of Conway Springs, Kody Truesdale (Becca), of Holly Springs, North Carolina, Ty Clain, of Wichita, Todd Clain (Breny), of Topeka, and Taryn, of Kansas City. She is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren, Chloe and Dylan Henderson, Kayla, Lane, Faith, and Lacy Kelly, Arianna, Elissa, and Mario Clain, Sienna, Quinten, and Hudson.

Shirley met her husband who was an Airman at McConnell AFB in Wichita, and was the proud mother of three boys who served in the military. Her husband Barry Sr. retired from the Kansas Air National Guard along with sons, Barry Jr. and Terry. Son, Robert served in the US Army. She also is the proud grandmother of retired Lt. Col. Mark Kelly Jr. of the Kansas Air National Guard. Mark Jr.'s wife, Tracy also served in the KANG. Mark Jr.'s daughter, Kayla serves in the KANG and son, Lane serves in the US Army. Maj. Todd Clain and Maj. Breny Clain of the KANG, in Topeka, KS. You can say that Shirley was the matriarch of a military family.

A viewing is scheduled for Friday, February 21, 2025, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., with a Rosary at 7:00 p.m., at Downing & Lahey West Mortuary 10515 West Maple.
