Shirley J. Clemons

Shirley Joan Clemons, 87, of Avon, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 23, 2026.

Born on February 11, 1939, in Indianapolis, Shirley’s life was marked by resilience, devotion, and quiet strength. Though born to Kenneth Carpenter and Irene Coovert Carpenter, she was lovingly raised by Grace and Charles Havens, whose care and guidance shaped the woman she would become. Through their love, she learned perseverance, faith, and the importance of family.

Shirley was married to Robert Clemons for 68 years before his passing a little over two years ago on September 16, 2023. Together they built a life centered on commitment and shared memories, including a love for line dancing in their younger years.

She was a devoted mother to four children. She was preceded in death by her sons, David Clemons and James Clemons. She is survived by her daughters, Debra (Doug) Bolin and Lisa Clemons. She was a proud grandmother to Austin and Taylor Bolin, Cody Kikendall, and Shawn Moy, and a cherished great-grandmother to one great-grandchild.

A lifelong musician, Shirley had a remarkable gift for playing the piano by ear, without sheet music. She played throughout her entire life and shared her talent faithfully in church for many years. Music was woven into her spirit — steady, comforting, and expressive.

In her senior years, Shirley attended Harmony Baptist Church. Following the passing of her husband, she moved to Park Square Manor in Avon, where she lived the remainder of her life. That chapter became one of unexpected joy and renewal. She formed meaningful friendships there and truly loved the community she found. In widowhood, Shirley rediscovered herself. She valued quality time above all else and treasured simply being present with those she loved. Her later years reflected independence, growth, and gratitude.

In her final years, she was lovingly cared for by her family, who ensured she remained surrounded by support, dignity, and compassion.

Shirley’s life was one of endurance, faith, and unwavering love. She is reunited now with her beloved husband and sons. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 4, 2026 from 12:00 Noon to 1:00 PM at Harmony Baptist Church, located at 5693 Broyles Road, Avon, IN 46123.

Her funeral service will follow at 1:00 PM. Pastor Jonathan Lilly will officiate.

Burial will follow at West Ridge Park Cemetery in Indianapolis.
