Shirley (Deveney) Drinkwater of Stoneham passed away peacefully at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers on January 30, 2022 at the age of 81. Born in Franklin, NH, December 7, 1940, daughter of the late Walter W. and Margaret (Soley) Arnold and sister of Margaret Deshaies and her husband Roger of Chelmsford. Shirley was a lifelong resident of Stoneham and graduate of Stoneham High School Class of 1958. She will be remembered for her love and passion for figure skating. In her youth she was a competitive figure skater with the Commonwealth Figure Skating Club in Lynn. Her passion for the sport led to a 25 year career. She was a long time member, coach, and show choreographer with the North Shore Figure Skating Club and ran a Learn-to-Skate program at the MDC Flynn Rink in Medford. Upon retiring from skating, she held several positions as a Medical Secretary in the Winchester Hospital system and most recently as a Traffic Director for the Town of Stoneham. She liked to keep busy and enjoyed gardening, biking, candlepin bowling and family trips to Lake Winnipesaukee. Shirley was the beloved wife of Robert J. Drinkwater to whom she was married 29 years. Her love of music and dancing led them to meet at the Wonderland Ballroom. Together they enjoyed traveling, attending music & jazz festivals, car shows and long adventurous car rides. Beloved "Mom" of Debora A. Serrano and husband Dennis of Wakefield, Shirley L. Trant and husband Robert of Wakefield, Margaret (Dede) Donato and husband Donald of Virginia and Michael Noren and wife Celia of Saugus. Proud "Grammy" of grandchildren Matthew, Caitlin, Jennifer, Sara, Laura, Christina and great-grandchildren Dominic, Victoria, Adrianna & Michael Jr. She is survived by step-daughter Kelly (Drinkwater) Crowther and husband Robert of Wareham, and their children Matthew and Ryan. Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the McDonald-Finnegan Funeral Home, 322 Main St. Stoneham on Sunday February 6 from 1-4 p.m. Funeral Service to be held in the funeral home on Monday February 7 at 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Shirley's name to the United States Figure Skating Association - Memorial Fund https://www.usfigureskating.org/support/donate/memorial-fund or to Kaplan Family Hospice House 75 Sylvan St., Suite B-102, Danvers, MA 01923 https://www.caredimensions.org/giving/ways-to-give/memorials.cfm

I remember Auntie Shirley every time I go to a rink (which is a lot) and see a figure skater on the ice. She was my first and best figure skating coach and gave me a great head start before I had to switch to a place closer to home. What I remember about her lessons is that they were so much more personalized and enthusiastic. There was never any standing still and getting cold or bored. She really loved to teach the sport! It was a really special time Spent with her. White skates with picks, fluffy skate covers and spins - such fond memories. Keep skating and spinning Auntie Shirley! ❤

So sorry for your families loss. Our mother's wee High School friends. I remember moms stories about her friend the figure skater.

Shirley, Bob & Family,
My sincere condolences on the loss of your mother/grandmother. From all accounts she was indeed a special lady with many interests and accomplishments. Clearly, her life and loves were her family. Sorry I can't make the arrangements as I'm in FL.
