Shirley Rose Ebey, 97, of Macomb, Illinois passed away at 9:28 pm on Thursday August 1, 2024 in Macomb. She was born July 20, 1927 in New Salem Township, McDonough County to William and Nellie (McDonald) Ash. She married John E. Ebey on August 20 1955 in Kahoka, Missouri. She was 28 years old, and John had just turned 21 eleven days earlier. He preceded her in death in 2020.
Surviving are two children, a son, Steven John Ebey of Macomb and a daughter, Tina (John) Longmire of Peoria, Illinois; one sister, Athel Florine Ash of Macomb, Illinois; one granddaughter, Eva Lauren Holeman, and one great granddaughter, Maggie Rose Sanchez.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers Stanley, Sanford (Hazel), and Garland Ash; two sisters, Olive Louise Ash and Margaret (Royal) Bryan; three sisters in law, Beverly (Stanley) Ash, Betty (Garland) Ash, and Harue (Robert) Ebey; two brothers in law, Royal Bryan and Robert Ebey.
Shirley attended Adair Methodist Church and is a graduate of Adair High School. Shirley worked at Camp Ellis, beginning in the PX, then working in the motor pool, then taking dictation and doing secretarial duties. She was very young and memories of this time affected her greatly. She made many friends there and sadly, lost many friends and classmates serving overseas. She is one of the longest living former employees of Camp Ellis. She enjoyed going to Camp Ellis Days. Later she worked at King Seeley Thermos for over 38 years.
Shirley loved traveling, going on summer vacations, playing the piano, watching live local music, reading, writing, drawing, star gazing, and spending time at the family farm with all of her family. She especially loved family picnics before the fireworks in Glenwood Park. But most of all she loved meeting new people and helping people. Throughout her life she never failed to be a volunteer for any organization or fundraising charity and was always there for family and friends.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday August 10th at Oakwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Macomb Fire Department, with special designation towards Heroes Fund to assist child victims of fires. Dodsworth-Piper-Wallen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Please sign the guestbook and leave condolences at www.dodsworthfh.com.
