Shirley Erickson was born on March 16, 1933 on a farm in Greene County Iowa, the daughter of Alva and Jannetta Campbell. About at the age of three, the family moved to a farm west of Pilot Mound. She attended and graduated from Pilot Mound Community School with the class of 1951. During the next four years, Shirley was employed as a “hired girl” in many homes in the surrounding area.

On July 20, 1955, Shirley married Dwain Erickson in Blue Earth, Minnesota, and they established their home in Ogden. Shirley was a stay at home mom and did in home daycare while raising their family of three boys, Robert, Larry, and Roger. In her later years, Shirley worked for Foodland Grocery Store and School Food Service before opening Shirley’s Lunch at the Don Williams Boathouse during the summer months of 1990-1992.

Shirley and Dwain were divorced in 2000. She moved to Pilot Mound and in 2008, she moved to Boone to be closer to her family. She was active with fundraisers for the church as well as other events in town.

Shirley joined the Groom-Kimsey American Legion Auxiliary in 1978 and became a lifetime member in 2001. During her years in this organization, she held the office of President, Secretary/Treasurer, and Chaplain for Groom-Kimsey Unit #16 of Pilot Mound as well as Boone County President, Secretary/Treasurer and Chaplain for many years. When the Groom-Kimsey unit disband, she transferred her membership to Arthur D. Lance American Legion Auxiliary Unit #56 in Boone, where she held the office of President, Secretary/Treasurer, and Chaplain.

In her younger years, bowling, gardening and canning were her past times. As years went by that was replaced with sewing, embroidering, piecing and quilting quilts for herself and the Pilot Mound Quilters. Childcare and cooking-baking were always a very important part in Shirley’s life.

Among her survivors are her son, Robert (Julie) Erickson of Boone, IA; grandsons, Mike Erickson, Ryan (Rene) Maakestad, Ethan Lowman, Taylor Eshmont, and Jeremy Pritchett; granddaughters, Jennifer (Jonathon) Schoeberl and Brittney (Matt) Osmundson; great-grandchildren, Brayden, Nolan, Kalyn, and Lincoln Schoeberl; Madeline (Kieran) Hartley, Rylin Pritchett, Kaydence Sorenson, Colby and Carter Osmundson; brother, Earl (Judy Mayse) Campbell; and brother-in-law, Torger (Clardzell) Johnson; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.

In addition to her parents, Shirley was also preceded in death by her two sons, Larry Erickson in September of 1992 and Roger Erickson in February of 2017; sister, Verla Morgan in April of 2020; sister-in-law, Ramona Campbell in August of 2020; nephew, David L. Campbell in 2021; brother-in-law, Leo Morgan in 2021; and sister, LaVon Johnson in 2023.

Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
