On May 28, 1940, a sweet baby girl warmed the hearts of her parents, mother the late Mildred, Father Hayward, whom later named her Shirley. Also, known as "Sookie". Shirley grew into a beautiful young woman, who was known for her sweet smile and loving spirit. Shirley attended the Philadelphia School District where she received her education. Who would know that she would later find work there! She worked as a Lunchroom Attendant at the Potter Thomas School for years. She worked various jobs, the one she loved most, warmed her heart and soul. She was able sprinkle her love on her grandchildren and other children in the neighborhood. She watched, nurtured, raised and protected all of these little souls as their parents worked during the day. She had a heart of gold! She was very involved in her community and was known for as always having the whitest steps on the block! She will be well remembered by her smile, welcoming arms to her family and friends in need. She was very passionate about shopping at her favorite stores QVC, Ross, and Walmart.
Shirley became a member of The House of God Church, where she received the baptism of the Holy Ghost! She loved to attend her services and loved to praise the Lord! On days when she was shut in, she was visited by the missionary who prayed with her and sung songs, until The Spirit of the Lord filled the room. Her favorite scripture reading was the book of Psalms - 23 Chapter- The Lord Is My Shepherd, I shall not want! She was truly loved and will be missed by her church family. and friends.
Shirley leaves behind 5 beautiful children Karen, Kim, Linda, Wendy, and Micheal. 17 grandchildren, 33 great grands, and 1 great-great grand child, a host of nieces and nephews' family and friends. One son in law, David Wingfield and daughter in law LeChaur Flemmings.
Our mother faced her sudden illness with remarkable courage, strength, and unwavering faith! On her hardest and challenging days she fought! She prayed! She pressed! She endured, as a good Soldier! This battle was not hers, it was The Lord's! She continued the rest in knowing, that God was with her through it all! He never fails! Everyone around her loved on her. She knew… whatever she wanted or needed, her family was there! On November 09, 2025, early morning, an angel called her home. She took her wings… she gracefully slept away, in the loving arms of our Lord. Her resilience will forever remain a testament to incredible Woman she was. Though our hearts are heavy, we take comfort in knowing her Love and memories she leaves behind will forever live in us! Her strength, and spirit will continue to guide us in the days ahead. We will miss you Mom…Grandma…Great Grandma and Auntie…., We are forever grateful for the time we were blessed to share. Until we meet again "We Love You" The Family
