Shirley Jean Giger, 93, of O'Fallon, IL, born August 11, 1932, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 2, 2025. Shirley led a full and blessed life as she and her husband, Joe, lived around the globe while he served 31 years in the U.S. Air Force.
She raised her 6 children and was very involved as a volunteer throughout her life. She started out as a Girl Scout leader and volunteered for many years in the Boy Scouts as Joe's passion for scouting became hers. She was awarded the Silver Beaver Award, which is one of Scouting's most prestigious awards for volunteers. The entire Giger family was involved in Scouts at some point in their lives, which was a reflection on Joe and Shirley. Two of her sons became Eagle Scouts. Most family vacations in the early years were camping trips. Shirley headed up fundraisers to help local troops raise money for various activities and supplies as well as allowing them to send scouts to summer camp who could not afford it otherwise. Additionally, she volunteered as an election judge for many years and worked at the St. Louis Airport USO in their "Greeting Program" to welcome soldiers home. She loved the military and those serving our country as her husband Joe had done for so many years. She was also involved in helping our veterans by organizing social activities at Jefferson Barracks Hospital; and, helping her community by providing food donations to St. Vincent De Paul charities and the O'Fallon Food Pantry, who feed the hungry.
She was a long-time member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church, in O'Fallon, IL where she enjoyed volunteering for many church activities, wherever she was needed. She was always willing to lend a hand, whether it was counting money at their yearly Nick Fest, or consistently providing large amounts of food to support the church's Children's Summer Camp programs. She was a Mary Kay consultant for many years and worked as a tax preparer with H & R Block, after the kids were grown. She was a member of the Fairview Heights Toastmasters Club. Shirley loved all types of trivia and puzzles and was still doing the daily Wordle until recently.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Joachim J. Giger of O'Fallon, IL; her parents, Edgar "Happy" Davis and Louise, nee Stutts, Davis of Belleville, IL; her brother Irvin "Sonny" Davis of Cedar Park, TX; her son Joachim W. Giger of Omaha, NE; and, her daughter Debra E. Norton of Adelanto, CA.
Shirley is survived by her brother, Floyd "Butch" Davis of CA; sister-in-law Carol Davis of Belleville, IL; two sons, Steven M. (Jenifer) Giger of Surprise, AZ and John Gregory Giger of Fairview Heights, IL; two daughters, Elizabeth G. (Steve) Bell of Franklin, TN and Angela T.
