Shirley Hulse Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Ocean County Cremation Service - Toms River on Dec. 13, 2025.
Shirley Ruth Hulse (née Clayton), 89, passed away peacefully on December 10, 2025, in Brick, New Jersey. Born on April 28, 1936, in Lakewood, New Jersey, Shirley lived a vibrant and spirited life that left a lasting impression on all who knew her.

Raised in Lakewood, Shirley attended local schools through high school. She later dedicated herself to raising her family as a homemaker and also worked at the Lakewood Country Club during her later years. Her time at the country club was marked by her unmistakable energy and humor-often seen riding around the golf course with her beloved dachshund, Mrs. T, playfully chasing off school kids from the greens.

Shirley was a woman of deep faith and conviction. Introduced to Jesus by her grandmother, she became a devoted member of Jackson Baptist Church for over two decades. There, she gave generously of her time and spirit, volunteering at the church's food pantry-which she affectionately named the "Open Arms Food Pantry."

A true firecracker in every sense of the word, Shirley lived life on her own terms. She had an unshakable love for sports-especially those involving a ball-including volleyball, bowling, tennis, softball, and most passionately, golf. Her competitive streak extended to board games as well; if she wasn't winning, there was always the possibility of a flipped board.

Her zest for life was matched by her flair for style and speed. Shirley adored sports cars and famously followed a car carrier just to purchase her dream vehicle-a Mazda Miata MX5-before anyone else could claim it.

In addition to her dynamic personality and athletic passions, Shirley was known for her culinary talents. Her cheesecake, potato salad, and Spanish rice were legendary among family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Alfred Hulse; son Gregory Hulse; parents Dorothy and Joseph "Scotty" Clayton; and siblings Eva, Dorothy, Eleanor, Ann, Janet, Katherine "Jewel," Susan, Joseph, Albert, Donald, and Lawrence.

Shirley leaves behind a loving family who will cherish her memory: daughter-in-law Patricia Hulse; grandchildren Mark Pederson, Jessica Pederson, Aaron Hulse and his wife Danielle, Kimberly Hulse and fiancé Kyle Simmons, Timothy Hulse, and David Hulse; as well as great-grandchildren Sophia, Perlita, Olivia, Francesca, Harper, Franco, and Mikaela.

Shirley's legacy is one of fierce independence, boundless energy, unwavering faith-and an undeniable knack for making life unforgettable. May her memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.
