SHIRLEY ANNE LANGER, age 81, of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe and a devout Catholic, passed away peacefully at Lakeshore Assisted Living in Waseca on Monday August 11, 2025, surrounded by loved ones.
Shirley was born in Grafton, ND, on April 25, 1944, to parents Edward and Myrtle LeQuire. She graduated from Grafton High School in 1962 and then spent two years at Sacred Heart Convent in Fargo, ND. On November 20, 1965, Shirley was united in marriage to Marvin Langer at the Church of Saint Casimir in St Paul, MN. They were married for 54 years before Marvin died in 2020. Shortly after their marriage, Marvin’s sister Bernice passed away, leaving her 3 children without parents, so Marvin and Shirley opened their home to Roger, Barb, and Tom Curtis and later added to their family with 4 more children, Gina, Michele, Jessie, and Jeremy. Shirley began her working life as a nurse’s aid in St. Paul and later became a licensed practical nurse employed in Waseca and Owatonna. She also offered home health care and worked as a school nurse at Sacred Heart School in Waseca. Shirley was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church where she was a member of the Catholic Daughters and taught religious education classes. She had also enjoyed being a Brownie/Girl Scout Leader, volunteering to chaperone and attend different school events, singing, dancing, going to different casinos, playing bingo, and walking to buy her scratch off tickets at the local Kwik Trip.
Shirley is survived by her children Gina Groth of Waseca, Michele Langer of Mankato, Jessie (Andy) Kath of Waseca, Jeremy (Sam) Langer of Waseca, Roger Curtis of Donna, TX, Barb (Jennifer Muse) Curtis of Salt Lake City, UT, Tom (Julie) Curtis of St Paul; her grandchildren, Peyton, Derek, Emilee, Alexis, Madalynne, Aydan, Mya, Joe, Bethany, Samantha, Jack, Henry, Isabelle, Zac, Angie, Andrea, Andrew, Ashley, and Dan; and great-grandchildren Bella, Dominic and Grayson. She is also survived by her sisters Beverly (Richard) Bolduc and Mary Hewitt (Greg Hahn). Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; siblings, Louie, Lloyd, John, Tom, Jim, Gene, Helen, and Betty; and in-laws, Joseph and Francis Langer, Bernice, Art, Grace, Kathleen, Victor, and Wilfred.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, August 18, 2025, at 10:30 am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Waseca, with Fr. Glenn Frerichs officiating. That same morning there will be a reading of the Rosary at 9:00 am, followed by a time to greet Shirley’s family from 9:30 am to 10:30 am. Interment will take place at Calvary Cemetery in Waseca.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or Sacred Heart Catholic School. Dennis-Steffel-Omtvedt Funeral and Cremation Service in Waseca is handling arrangements.
With grateful hearts, Shirley’s family would like to thank the staff at Lakeshore Assisted Living, formerly Latham Place Assisted Living for their loving care and attention during the 8 years our mom resided there. We also want to say a very special thank you to Claudia, RN, with St Croix Hospice.
