Shirley Joyce (Ferris) McClellan, age 95, of Hanson, died peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on January 18, 2026.
Born in
Sanford, Maine on February 12, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Edith Ferris. Shirley loved to tell stories of her early years living on Minerva Avenue in Sanford with the growing Ferris family. At the age of ten, Shirley moved with her family from Maine to Boston. Just a year later, the Ferris family moved again, settling in the town of Hanson. This small town is where Shirley met the love of her life, the late Cam McClellan. Meeting in their pre-teen years, they went on to become high school sweethearts who graduated together from Whitman High School in 1948. Shirley and Cam were married at the age of 21 in Virginia, where Cam was stationed while serving his country in the Navy.
Shirley and Cam shared 35 loving years together raising their two cherished daughters, Maureen and Jo-Anne. When Cam passed away unexpectedly at the age of 56, Shirley found comfort in her faith and continued to live her life with joy and purpose. Part of that purpose was her work; she spent 31 years at the Hanson Branch of the Rockland Trust Company where she built relationships with coworkers and people in the Hanson community. Although she retired from the bank in 1992, she kept busy working at Ridder's Golf Course as the hot dog lady and as a hostess at Butterfield's Restaurant in Rockland.
In retirement, Shirley did many things to enrich her life, such as taking painting lessons, modeling classes, bowling, ceramics, and she spent time on cruises and vacations. Shirley was an avid Red Sox fan, staying up to watch late games and keeping herself up to date on all of the players and their statistics. Always a social butterfly, Shirley most recently enjoyed her Wednesday and Friday mornings going to breakfast at Mo's and Connie's with two special friends, Dottie and Betty.
But of all her adventures, her favorite thing to do was to spend time with her beloved family. Shirley's two daughters, her six grandchildren, and her eight great-grandchildren were the light of her life. If you ran into her somewhere in Hanson, she probably told you about what they were most recently up to, her pride clearly obvious. And her family's love for her was just as great, all competing for the role of Nana's "favorite". She had a knack for making you feel like you were the most cherished person in the world when you were with her.
Along with her parents and devoted husband Cam, Shirley was predeceased by her brothers, Roy (Glenna) Ferris and Ray (Roberta) Ferris, her sisters Barbara (John) White and Kay (David) Dorn, sisters-in-law Edith (McClellan) Gilson and Edna (McClellan) Howland, and her son-in-law, Jimmy Daley.
She is survived by her devoted and loving daughters, Maureen Daley and Jo-Anne (Fran) Coyle, her six grandchildren, Theresa (Dave) Scott, Patti (Jason) Urquhart, Conor (Jenny) Daley, Kate (Paul) Fisher, Brendan (Kimberly) Daley, and Sean (Shaelyn) Coyle, and her eight great-grandchildren, Cameron, Cooper, Sadie, Ryan, PJ, Keegan, Jovi, and Llewyn. Shirley is also survived by her brothers Bill (Carol) Ferris and Dick (Peg) Ferris, sisters-in-law Sally (McClellan) Doyle and Maria McClellan, many cherished nieces and nephews, and life-long friends Wilbur and Barbara Danner.
