Shirley McKay Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A. - Leonardtown on Dec. 13, 2025.
Shirley Ann (Fenhagen) McKay, 89 of Ridge, Maryland, died on December 12, 2025, at St. Mary's Nursing Center in Leonardtown, Maryland. Born July 3, 1936, in Scotland, Md., she was the oldest daughter of the late Loubertus Fenhagen and Helen Morgan Fenhagen. She was married for 62 years to Joseph Emerson "Lindy" McKay, who preceded her in death on October 29, 2020.

Shirley graduated from St. Michael's High School in 1954 and began her government career at the Naval Air Station, Patuxent River, Maryland. She retired in 1993 after 39 years of service, having spent 30 of those years in the NAS Security Department, attaining the position of Assistant Security Officer. She was awarded the Meritorious Civilian Service Award for her many accomplishments.

Shirley was a 55-year honorary life member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Ridge Unit 255, where she served five terms as Unit President. She served as Southern Maryland District Secretary and Membership Chairman. She was appointed as Color Bearer for the District, and for the Department of Maryland, proudly advancing the flag at meetings, conventions and parades.

She chaired several auxiliary committees at the state level and attended state conventions as a delegate. She enjoyed traveling to Legion Posts throughout the state, promoting the American Legion Auxiliary programs. She attended the National Convention in Nashville, Tennessee and Baltimore, and was appointed a committee chairman at the Baltimore convention.

She was a member of several organizations including the Eight and Forty (8/40) Department of Maryland, a service organization dedicated to helping children with respiratory diseases, The National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE), and The Federally Employed Women (FEW).

A woman of great faith, Shirley was a member of St. Michael's parish in Ridge, Maryland and was a member of the Ladies of Charity for over 60 years.

Out of all Shirley's accomplishments, nothing brought her more joy than her family especially her children. She was a member of the Little League Auxiliary and served as Team Mother for all four of her sons and loved more than anything to cheer them on.

She loved good music, dancing, playing the piano and having her family around for the holidays. She was dedicated to her grandchildren who were her pride and joy.

Shirley is survived by her sons, Joseph Warren "Herbie" McKay, Chris Dale McKay (Lori), Kevin Gerard McKay, and Kim Loubertus McKay (Karen White), daughter in law Tina McKay, and grandchildren, Kayla Ann McKay, Kurt Anthony McKay, Kyle Robert McKay, Kole Harper McKay, and Conner "C.J. Little.

In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by her two sisters Sharon Gail Semler and Shelva Jean Davis, and her two infant sons, triplet brothers of her son, Kevin.

Serving as pallbearers will be Kurt McKay, Kyle McKay, Kole McKay, C.J. Little, Grant Cochrane, and Scott Cochrane; with honorary pallbearers, Ronnie Lengel, Steve Lengel, Robbie Wood, Mike Fenhagen, David Norris, Ben Fenhagen, and Richard Manderville.

Contributions may be made to Ridge Volunteer Rescue Squad and Hospice of St. Mary's.
