Born on July 2, 1938, in Newport, North Carolina, Shirley was the daughter of the late W.E. “Lige” and Lola Gray Guthrie. Growing up on the family farm in Bogue, Shirley wasn’t afraid of hard work. Known to be a bit of a spitfire, her red hair helped define her no-nonsense personality. She didn’t hold back in telling you what she thought but it was that same strength that endeared her to so many. While not having children of her own, Shirley was a mother to many, sharing her love and guidance along the way.
With the virtue of a Proverbs 31 woman, Shirley embodied strength, faith, wisdom, and a beautiful love for her Lord and Savior. Shirley and her late husband, Herbert, ministered to thousands through the powerful dramatization, "Worthy Is the Lamb", which was a moving and unforgettable experience for those who were blessed to have seen such an inspirational, musical drama, documenting the life of Christ, from His mission to His crucifixion and resurrection. Serving as the General Manager for the production was one of her many honors, as well as earning the Chamber of Commerce Woman of the Year in Swansboro, she was the Carteret County Chamber of Commerce Small Businessperson of the Year and a member of the Carteret County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.
Shirley’s church involvement included being a member of Triune Holiness Church in Maysville and White Oak Church of God where she was a charter member and also served as the church secretary. Shirley also helped lead and guide teens through her work with the Lamplighter Youth Group at Broad Creek Church of God. Gifted with a beautiful voice, Shirley and the youth group traveled to numerous churches, singing and blessing countless congregations.
When you saw Shirley, you could be sure she’d be dressed to the nines, always looking sharp and put together. In her free time, she loved cooking and was always ready to try a new recipe. Her classic dish was her amazing chicken casserole. She indulged her sweet tooth with homemade preacher cookies and with Down East lemon pie from the Sanitary. On a cold day, she’d look forward to making a pot of vegetable beef soup which was certainly her favorite comfort food.
Shirley enjoyed traveling, going to the Holy Land was one of her most special experiences. Other destinations included trips to Mexico and Las Vegas. She loved meeting new people, seeing new sights, and learning the customs of the environment.
Those remaining to cherish her memory are her precious fur baby, Chloe Marie Page; niece, Tajuana Hill (Scotty) of Bogue; nephew, William Douglas “Doug” Guthrie Jr. of James City; great nieces and nephews, Brittany Guthrie Hadden, William Justin Guthrie, and Ashelyn Guthrie Couey (Andrew), all of Bogue; great-great nieces, Ema Lee Hadden and Fiona Grace Hadden, both of Bogue; sister-in-law, Sherry Clark Guthrie of Bogue; special friends and caregivers, Dennis and Shirley Burgess and Kim Riggs; along with numerous loving cousins, family and friends.
In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by the love of her life, her beloved husband, Herbert Franklin Page who passed away in 2021; her brother, William Douglas Guthrie; and her nephew, Patrick Ryan Guthrie.
