Shirley M. Powell, age 91, of Fort Wayne, IN, passed away on Thursday, February 8, 2024, at Saint Anne Home. Born on September 22, 1932, in Hoopeston, IL, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Bonnie (Boyer) Powell. Shirley earned both her Bachelor of Science and Master's Degrees from St. Francis University, Fort Wayne. She worked as a Behavioral Clinician at the Fort Wayne Development Center until her retirement in 1992. Shirley also worked as a Treatment Counselor for the Bureau of Adult Corrections Center in Wilmington, DE; the Executive Coordinator for the Domestic Violence Task Force in Pierre, SD; a Reading Specialist for Paulding Exemptive Village in Boulding, OH; and a teacher at James Smart Elementary in Fort Wayne. When not working Shirley enjoyed being with her beloved pets. She was devout in her beliefs and was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. She served as a Minister of Holy Communion for Parkview Hospital, Glenbrook Nursing Home, Canterbury Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, and St. Charles Parish. Shirely was also a member of Children of Resurrection and the Praise and Worship Group. Shirley will be remembered for her feisty demeanor and also as someone who was loved by all and loved all in her pathway. Left to cherish her memory are her nieces, Karen Fisher and Crystal McGee, both of Florida. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Bill Powell; sister, Eileen Richardson; niece Pamela Richardson; and nephew, Danny Crawford. A Mass of Christian Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 22, 2024 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 4916 Trier Road, Fort Wayne, IN 46815 with visitation one hour prior. Shirley will be laid to rest at Catholic Cemetery, Fort Wayne. Memorials can be written to the St. Vincent Society at St. Charles Parish. Condolences can be left at www.divinemercyfuneralhome.com.
