She was born on October 23, 1934, the youngest child of Bryant and Carrie Pittman in Verona, North Carolina. She graduated from Dixon High School in 1953 and was always proud that she was voted by her classmates as the first Miss Dixon High School.

She is also survived by her loving caretaker and friend, Pam Wilson, and by her dear friend, Joe Short, who both treated her as if she were their own mother.
Shirley retired from MCCS at Camp Lejeune and the New River Air Station in 2014. She was an avid Bowler and Bingo player and enjoyed calling Bingo aboard the local bases for many years. She also enjoyed trips to Las Vegas with Karen and playing slots on the gambling boat in Myrtle Beach with her granddaughters. She loved her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, her sisters and their extended families dearly and always looked forward to gathering with them at the annual Pittman Family Reunion. Throughout her life she had a great love for flowers and enjoyed working in her garden as long as she was able. Thereafter, she made sure she was always surrounded by beautiful flowers and her front deck was full of blooms and blossoms provided by her children and grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon, prior to the service, from 1:00 until 2:00 at the funeral home.
