Cumberland-Shirley Melissa Quagliariello, 85, of Cumberland, passed away on Sunday, October 3, 2021, at UPMC Western Maryland.
Born in Fairmont City, PA, on April 5, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Howard E. and Irma Lucille (Smith) Carlson. In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, John Michael Quagliariello; brothers, Delbert Carlson, Alvin Carlson and wife, Frankie, and Leon Carlson and wife, Barb.
Shirley was a U.S. Army veteran. After being discharged, she became a loving wife, mother, and homemaker. She loved to cook and bake, and she belonged to the Multiple Sclerosis Support Group.
Shirley is survived by her daughters, Gina Ratke and husband, Greg, JoAnn Kaufman, and Grace Lutz and husband, Sam; grandchildren, Jessica Johnson and husband, Robert, Scott Ratke, Buddy Kaufman, Dustin Ernest and husband, Keenan, Levi Lutz and wife, Allison, and Cameron Lutz; great-grandchildren, Xander, Alexis, Caitlin, Christian, Griffin, Noah, Heath, and Julian; special sister-in-law, Ramona Powell. Shirley is also survived by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and grand-brother-in-law, George Ratke.
Because of health care considerations, and at Shirley's request, the family will not receive friends or conduct a funeral service. A private graveside service will be conducted at the MD State Veterans Cemetery, Rocky Gap, where military honors will be accorded by Ft. Cumberland Post 13 Honor Guard.
Shirley was always with a beautiful smile. She has been broken, she has been challenged, she has felt the pain most couldn't handle, she was braver than she thought, stronger than we knew, and an inspiration to us all.
She never gave up till her body wore out and she could no longer fight.
A TRUE WARRIOR TILL THE END!
