Shirley Gillies Rockwood, age 90, of Lindon, Utah, passed away peacefully with family by her side on Monday, August 14, 2023. She was born on May 18, 1933 in Beaver, Utah to George Elmo and Jeneva Shipp Gillies. She was the oldest of four children, with sisters Ida Rene and Deanna, and brother Bonner - all of whom she adored. She was proud of her heritage and who and where she came from. She married Craig George Marshall on March 7, 1949 and they were blessed with three beautiful children, Cheryl, Michael, and Robert. The family moved to Springville, and Shirley enjoyed working at Ahlander Hardware while furthering her education, becoming proficient in shorthand.
Later in life, she married C. LaVar Rockwood, and they settled in Lindon, Utah, where Shirley became well known for her garden. She worked as an administrative assistant for the State of Utah in the Division of Alcohol and Drugs and for BYU in the Dean of Students office. She also was the Director of Human Resources at UVU and then finished her career at Sego Lily Elementary School in Lehi. She loved people, books, sports of every kind, flowers, and growing and harvesting fruits and vegetables from her garden. Her canning kitchen became a staple for her children and grandchildren, where time spent together was cherished by all fortunate enough to know her. She worked hard, and loved hard, and her family meant everything to her.
Shirley always called her family her legacy, and she led with love and grace, emulating her Savior in the way she loved and treated others. She is survived by sons, Michael Marshall, Robert (Cathy) Marshall, grandchildren Kirk Mecham, Shane (Kerri) Marshall, Drew (Courtney) Marshall, Kalli (Kent) Bowers, Chad (Melissa) Marshall, and Ryan (Natashia) Marshall, her sister, Ida Rene, and her brother Bonner (Diane) Gillies, along with 19 great grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Cheryl Kay Mecham, daughter-in-law Roxanne Marshall, husband C. LaVar Rockwood, sister Deanna, and grandson Cameron Marshall.
