Shirley Elizabeth (King) Sheaffer, age 83, resident of The Gardens at Gettysburg, passed peacefully at sunrise on the morning of July 31, 2024. She was the widow of the late William E. Sheaffer.
The daughter of the late William E. King and the late Helen Weisner Fishel King, she was born at York Hospital on March 21, 1941. She attended West York Area Schools until 1956 when she transferred to William Penn, where she graduated as a member of the National Honor Society in 1959. She worked at the lunch counter and bakery of the F.W. Woolworth Company until 1962 when she married William and moved to Hanover. They moved to Brodbecks, PA in 1971, where they lived for 15 years before moving to Spring Grove. She was a former member of Zion United Methodist Church in West York. Over the years, her interests included preserving food, writing in her journals and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Shirley also enjoyed reading and watching the Hallmark channel.
Shirley was preceded in death by her sister, Loretta (King) Ebersole, her daughter, Kristy Sheaffer, and her son-in-law Mike Brady, husband of Cindy. She is survived by her brother, Robert Fishel and his wife Barbara of York, a nephew, Thomas Fishel and his wife Heidi of Nevada, a niece, Margaret (Peg) Fishel of York, 4 children; William Sheaffer, Jr and his wife Nadine of Gettysburg, Brian Sheaffer of Spring Grove, Cindy Brady of East Berlin, and Scott Sheaffer and his wife Nicole of Elizabethtown, 3 grandchildren; Andrew Sheaffer of Fremont, Nebraska, Megan Sheaffer of Gettysburg, and Christine (Sheaffer) Myers and her husband Brandon of Gettysburg, and 4 great grandchildren; Katherine Myers, Mia Myers, Liam Myers and Wyatt Myers of Gettysburg.
A Funeral Service in celebration of Shirley's life will be held on Tuesday, August 6, 2024 at 1:30PM at Murphy-Beck Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., 501 Ridge Ave., McSherrystown, PA 17344 with Certified Life-Cycle Celebrant Donna Hoffman officiating. She will be laid to rest following the service at Rest Haven Cemetery in Hanover. A viewing will be held on Tuesday from 12:30PM – 1:30PM prior to the service at the funeral home.
